Duke was #2 in the pre tournament rankings that year and the pre-tournament ranking was 13.2 (5/11/15/16/19).

Connecticut was #25 in the pre tournament rankings in 2014 and the pre tournament average ranking was 11.8 (3/6/10/17/23).

Villanova was #5 in the pre tournament rankings this year and the pre tournament average ranking was 9 (1/4/7/13/20). I'd have to do a lot more reasearch, but I doubt anyone can top in the KenPom era.

I looked back at the 1997 RPI ratings, Arizona beat the 1/2/4 teams, but beat a 12 and 10 seed in the other games.

judging from reading this thread and the national media writeups and looking at the 538 in game odds trend line... i goota find means and time to watch a full replay of this game. seems likely to match the personal peak roundball game pleasure memories i mentioned a couple of days back (85 and ncstate over houston). less of an underdog shocker and less completely unbelievable shooting, but just as close, just as despicable an opponent, and much better basketball thanks to the shot clock. must see tv... even for someone like me who has drifted into near apathy about basketball thanks to too much direct and once removed exposure to inside stories of ncaa d1 sports criminality and too many decades of sixers mismanagement (tanking included). some games transcend the all the distractions that usually obscure the true spirit of sport as a celebration of life. sounds likethis was one of them. gotta find out for myself.

ps. pacino, totally support your right to hate the matchup too much to enjoy it and to say so. i would be the same about the mets winning the series, no matter how transended the play and no matter who they played or in what year. some hatreds can't be transcended by anything of this world while simultaneously too petty for divone redeption. thats part of being human.

I think they will absolutely be a top 5 team next year. Spellman is 6'9" 275 and Reynolds will be a solid rugged back-up big too. As Calvin mentioned, Eric Paschall from Fordham sat this year and will be redshirt Soph next year. He was the A-10 Freshman of the year before leaving Fordham because of a coaching change. He picked Villanova over Florida and Kansas so he was a big time get. Brunson improving and having the ball more with Arc graduating could be huge too. What a fun team to watch this year and they could be elite next year.

its fun how many bad basketball things happen in a college basketball game. i mean there were three big errors in the last 10 seconds. ocehfu trying to be the hero going for the steal, unc not guarding the inbounder/letting nova basically run unimpeded to the three line, forgetting about the the trail man (jenkins).

Yea it's almost like 18-22 year olds were playing in front of tens of thousands with millions watching at home.

If I was a Carolina fan I would be pissed at Williams. To not be able to pound Nova inside really was terrible, they had so many mismatches and a good entry pass would have led to an easy basket or a foul. Give Nova credit for what they did in fronting the big guys but for Williams to not adjust to that really was amazing.

Also, Nova won and Jay is great and the end is the most dramatic in college basketball history, but holy shit when will coaches realize TO FOUL UP 3 WITH 10 SECONDS LEFT

College basketball players shoot approximately 98% on game-altering three-pointers that should have no chance of going in
