Random Phillies thoughts(of impending winter sports)

Ruben was 100% right. At the time, Moss could not hit a major league fastball.

That this is solely because Ruben stubbornly kept him in the minors only facing minor league fastballs is a separate issue worthy of discussion.

and if he doesn't win, and Cole doesn't win on Sunday, it'll be the first time since 1945 that the Phils finish a complete season without a 10-game winner

I imagine Moss wouldn't have made much difference this year. If they had him, they wouldn't have signed Byrd, and Byrd has been pretty good this year. It would have saved some money, of course, but a lack of money isn't really the problem.

That's the closest I'll get to defending Rube and it ain't much.

Sarris: Yeah and we have you down as a good fastball hitter, so he got that one wrong.

I don't care about misjudging Moss. That happens, and Boston and Pittsburgh flubbed it too. But it highlights an over-reliance on proven veterans that I really hope they move away from

Although I hate Ruben Amaro more than pretty much anyone, for some reason I am taking a little satisfaction in that the three teams who were pursuing Marlon Byrd and told Rube he was being unreasonable (Mariners, Yankees, Reds) are all likely to fall just short of making the playoffs. Still don't know what the great shakes is with Jack Z.

The Reds are one game better than us. They fell short 6 weeks ago

Jack Z was in trouble before this season. Didn't his gang of Saber nerds claim he didn't listen to them?

That would probably be a top mark for the Mariners, lol.

Using fangraphs, and looking at OF's ops in the second half with enough ab to qualify for the batting title, Byrd is at 43rd, tied with Revere at .712. Ellsbury is at 37th with a .748, hunner is at 40th with a .734 trump and Braun are at 52 and 53 and a .680 and .673. Brandon moss is at 59 with a .592. This is out of 64 qualifiers and dom brown is not on the list. Interesting I guess.

Dom Brown is so lousy, he probably isn't even considered a major leaguer.

Austin Jackson, the outfielder they acquired for Nick Franklin has been .540 as a Mariner.
