It was his 4th longest hit of the season.

Burnett said he has not been himself all season. "But I pitched the best I could," he said. He signed with the Phillies because he believed they offered him a chance at a championship.

"I expected a lot of things to be different," Burnett said. "A lot."

Like what?

"I told you we'll discuss that when the time comes," Burnett said.

Classic Gelb:

SAN DIEGO — The 17th loss for A.J. Burnett looked much like the ones before it. He settled after a inauspicious start but issued a two-out walk that bred trouble.

What inning? Did it lead to runs? What did that have to do with the loss? His writing sometimes...

Brookover wrote a similar column a couple days ago, but while I agreed with the general view all the reasons he supposedly had for being down on the Phillies were irrelevant or just plain wrong to me. Hated the broadcast crew, but felt the reason was Moyer and Stairs rather than the elephant in the room. Felt the Phillies were bad at fundamentals while I think they're at least average at that. Felt like they never drew walks or saw pitches, when those a couple of the things they actually do a little better than average. And mentioned the unlikeable thing, which I really don't think is true, though there is a little disconnect in that their most likeable players tend to suck and some of their competent players are real douches.

Except for Hamels they don't have any premier players. Utley's the best at his position in the league, but it's a low point for the position. If they had a couple of outstanding players and more very good ones they'd be a lot more likeable and look a lot more fundamentally sound. Though since this is Philly I'm not sure you'd see that in the press anyway.

Steaks says the Phils' interest in Tomas is higher than it was for Castillo, and they'll be at his workout in the Dominican Republic this Sunday

He's right that it will cost a ton -- but saying we won't go big on him because we didn't on Castillo is a weak argument

He's also declaring Tomas less valuable to the Phillies than other teams because he thinks they can't contend, which is probably not the Phils' view

Wouldn't it make more sense to do what the Yankees did and pretty much sign the whole top 10 of international prospects than drop 100 million on Tomas? I am legitimately asking, I am not sure.

Feel like we will end up starting a " The Tomas Fiasco" thread which will have a first post saying "At least it isn't the Ryan Howard fiasco" as the first post.

Those July 16-yr old signings rarely pan out. We did some research a few months back and there's maybe a dozen players that have reached the majors in the past 10-15 years (and that includes consideration that it'll take about 5-6 years for them to work their way up)

I saw Murphy's analysis as well and thought that it was a bit premature. Tomas is twenty-three years or so old. If he can play, he's worth a high dollar long term deal. Its an investment that could erase the years of neglect that are showing in the farm system.

So, if this dude gets 7/100, that puts him at about $14mm/yr through his age 30 season (or maybe 31 depending on calendar stuff). Here is a list of guys who earned between $14mm and $15mm this year, excluding pitchers:

Nick Swisher at Designated Hitter, 1st Base
$15,000,000

Chase Utley at 2nd Base
$15,000,000

Carlos Beltran at Designated Hitter, Right Field
$15,000,000

Justin Upton at Left Field
$14,458,333

B.J. Upton at Center Field
$14,050,000

Jose Bautista at Right Field
$14,000,000

Ryan Zimmerman at 3rd Base
$14,000,000

Torii Hunter at Right Field
$14,000,000

Shin-Soo Choo at Left Field
$14,000,000

His upside is better than any of these guy are at this point (except maybe Bautista) IMO it's a no brainer to go after this kid, even at 7/100. It would be preferable to have a 23 y/o guy that has 6 years of control coming up to fill that spot, but we don't. So if this kid can play, then sign him, even if he doesn't turn out to be an impact guy like Puig, if e can be a guy who starts an OF spot for the next 7 years and have a few AS seasons, it's worth it.
