does joecatz of tgp hang around here? ¨interesting¨ grade of b+ for the phils offseason, curve or no curve. up to a point, he has a good argument: given the uncertainty about halladay, utley, and howard returning to health, and given the fact that there wasn´t enough minor league talent to allow for a big trade, the wisest choice for both short and long term really was filling the 3b/cf/sp/pen holes relatively cheaply with some combo of former all-stars looking to rebound, youth/upside, and guys in their prime that might break out. that leaves tons of flexibility to become trade market buyers if our vets do rebound, and also to switch over to rebuilding if they are done-zo. the only thing to argue is how big the punishment needs to be for the sheer horror of having d.young and betencourt anywhere in the organization.

of course, the grade for this offseason isn´t the same as amaro´s cumulative grade. amaro´s three great blunders -- howard, lee trade 2, and pence -- are the main reasons his options were so limited this offseason. without those, the phils could have had singleton at first, and the cash and prospects to get both uptons. through in the oft-forgotten disaster of the unnecessarily early lidge extension and the possibilities expand further.

he still ends up at c-level overall, because i really liked the victorino/werth/ruiz contract extensions, the lee and pedro trade month, the halladay trade/sign, and the hamels extension.

he could easily end up with a big fat F by this time next year. there is a staggering list of big decisions to make this year.

I still don't see how the Lee signing was a mistake. Who would we have right now in his spot in the rotation? Vance Worley? Happ?

you´re right. my bad. the amaro wasted money beyond howard came from extra years for ibanez and some relievers.
on lee, the bad move was trading him away for bad prospects.

and i wanted to add that my pick for worst move this offseason is lannan. i think there were better pitchers available at reasonable prices.

The Ibanez thing is so tired. Human garbage Milton Bradley (whom many here wanted) got the same deal. Was that Amaro's fault, too? Cubs and Angels and Mets were reportedly in on Ibanez. And if you want some laughs, go back and read the "Burrell signs for 2/16" thread. Or watch some highlights of Dunn in left field.

The other stuff is basically fair, although I'd add the Kendrick deal to the plus column, as well as the Mayberry and Horst trades. A little bit more of a longshot but the Thome sign and trade could prove helpful. We'll see about the Pence and Vic deals. Adams could prove a great move. We'll see about Revere/Worley and the Youngs.

As for Howard, I don't think it was realistic for Amaro cut bait with him and not bring in a high-priced replacement for 2012. So an "overpaid" slugger or a combination of Utley (1B) and Galvis would have been more likely than both Uptons this year. And there's no way they would have handed the position to Singleton.

If they hadn't extended Lidge, were they just gonna let him walk, coming off a WFC and perfect season? That would have been real ballsy.

I'd give Amaro a B and agree that the next two years are pivotal

Yes, ripping Rube for the Howard contract is fine but we'd have hated the alternatives even more. No way we'd have paid up for Pujols or Fielder.

i think i'd feel a lot better if they signed bourn to a reasonable contract and didn't make the revere trade.

im not sure what bourn and boras are looking for now, but at the time, there was no reasonable contract to negotiate with him. They could have waited the market out and tried to get bourn on a 1 or 3 year deal, but that would have been impossible to predict.

I'd feel better about 2013, but I'm optimistic on Revere moving forward and feel fortunate to have sold relatively high on Worley. We'll see how that goes, with Gillies' development as another factor
