Right-hander Ryan Madson declined his Reds option and has become a free agent.

Madson, who missed the 2012 season but is expected back at full strength in 2013, received a $2.5-million buyout for declining his option.

Madson was to be the Reds' closer before suffering an elbow injury last spring training, but the Reds eventually filed the closer job with the 100-mph-throwing Aroldis Chapman. Madson had Tommy John surgery last spring. He had been the Phillies' closer for much of 2011.

The Phillies are believed to have some interest in Madson, but he seeks a closer job. His former team has Jonathan Papelbon for that job.

MLBTR has their top 50 free agents up with predictions. They see us getting Upton, Youk and Mike Adams, though he admits the Phils probably can't afford all three.

He also has Bourn going to the Nats, and Vic to the Braves...

sign Eric Chavez and Jeff Keppinger
trade for Peter Bourjos
sign Ryan Madson

save money to buy an OF should the OF of Brown, Mayberry, Ruf, Nix and Bourjos not work or we have issues elsewhere

hope that Utley and Howard can play 150

(Brandy) only hinted at Halladay's personal issues during her Hall of Fame speech last July, when she said, "Roy would want everyone to know that people are not perfect. We're all imperfect and flawed in one way or another. We all struggle."

I think Utley will be lucky to play 135 games and howard about 145.

If they can both OPS .850 or higher, we'll be fine.

ESPN insider rumor says the phillies are interested in torii hunter. 37 year old ( will be 38 in July) AL OF who just had a 132 ops+, which was the highest of his career. What could go wrong!!??

Initial reports were that Madson declined it, and that's what his Cot's page shows. The bottom line is it doesn't matter, since CIN obviously would have declined it. If it was Madson, it was only him realizing the obvious and getting a few hours head start on letting Boras talk to other teams (though I think it's probably naive to think agents and GMs abide by Selig's no-tampering rules).
