it's a little surprising you would think a professional athlete couldn't be that stupid given how closely you follow sports

it's not news by now or anything but every couple weeks I punch some of Mike Trout's numbers into baseball reference's play index to see how amazing he is historically. he's got 10.2 WAR this year, his age 20 season. the next youngest guy to put up a WAR that high was Willie Mays. he put up 10.3 WAR when he was 23 years old. the only guy to put up more than Trout's 10.8 career WAR (including last year) by his age 20 season was Mel Ott, who started playing in MLB when he was 17. at this rate Trout would be a relative disappointment if he had a career that was only as good as Ott's, and Ott was elected to the HOF less than four years after he retired.

the other guys in the top ten, after Ott and Trout are Ty Cobb, Alex Rodriguez (the only non-OF), Al Kaline, Ken Griffey Jr., Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Vada Pinson and Jason Heyward.

Pinson's not in the HOF, but it looks like he was fairly underrated over his career. He only made two all-star teams but had about five seasons where he would have warranted it. He only played in one World Series and it was at age 22. The Reds teams he was on were mostly not great, and he usually played second fiddle to Frank Robinson. His age-20 season was the second-best of his career, and it was still almost 2.0 WAR lower than what Trout's is this year.

Dude is just an incredibly special player. He's the best player baseball's had since Barry Bonds and he's only 20 years old. He's three years ahead of Willie Mays and Ted Williams, four ahead of Ty Cobb, Jimmie Foxx, Lou Gehrig and Mickey Mantle. He might not get any better than this but it doesn't even matter. Even if he averages half of his WAR this season over the next four years, he'll be 11th all time for players up through their age-24 season.

WAR can suck in small samples, but when you look at seasons upon seasons of data the picture becomes really clear. Maybe Mike Trout won't be this good forever, but if he is for even just another couple years he'll be one of the most legendary players in baseball history.

edit: just talking position players here, btw. pitchers who woulda been included in this discussion: Bob Feller, Christy Mathewson, and unfortunately, Dwight Gooden.

Orioles called up Dylan Bundy after last night's 18-inning win in Seattle. Could be there for tonight's game. He was going to pitch in the instructional league anyway.

And today the Internet is abuzz with MVP arguments because Miggy cracked a grand slam last night and is closing in on the Triple Crown. What a wonderful world we live in.

Trout has been pretty human over the last month though.

I wouldn't have a problem with Miggy winning it if he gets the TC. It's a huge deal and it almost never happens, even if it's not a full measure of a player's value. Also, while it doesn't take away from what he has accomplished--on the contrary, in some contexts it adds to his story--Trout missed the first month of the season. Even though that's not entirely his fault, it does mean the Angels had a lesser player in his place over that period. Miggy's played 20 more games than he has, so his team never had to shove in a replacement-level or worse substitute for him.

On the other hand, Ted Williams won the TC in '42 and '47 and didn't win MVP either year. And unlike Miggy he did lead the AL in WAR both those years.

There's also the point that the TC excludes context and includes some stupid obsolete stats, and also that MVP voting is and always has been pretty arbitrary. So I don't really care who wins, but it's weird to me that Trout is having this kind of season and isn't a slam dunk.

yeah, lost his age 24-26 seasons to the war and still had the career he had. Unbelievable.

He also lost most of the '52 & '53 seasons while serving in the Korean War.

Between his baseball career and war exploits (and also in the Fishing HOF), he may be the baddest ass person ever

n Korea, Williams flew 39 combat missions before being being withdrawn from flight status in June 1953 after a hospitalization for pneumonia. This resulted in the discovery of an inner ear infection that disqualified him from flight status.[133] During the Korean War, Williams also served in the same Marine Corps unit with John Glenn, and in the last half of his missions, Williams was flying as Glenn's wingman.
