I guess some pitchers don't recover completely from TJS.....or in his case it could be the lack of roids

This O's team is remarkable. They have now won 15 consecutive extra inning games. 10 of those on the road. 9 different winning pitchers in the 15 games

BUT TEH EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE

For those who want to base MVP on WAR, a reminder that David Wright ranks above Buster Posey. Take that for what it's worth.

@RWKrupp agree, although I think the offensive metrics on fangraphs (wOBA) that have Cabrera just slightly ahead of Trout also flawed.

By 0.2 fWAR, and Wright has played in 7 more games. And it's mostly b/c Fangraphs says that Posey is terrible on the basepaths. B-R has them as being 0.1 WAR apart. Oh the humanity!

What a bunch of nonsense.

Which WAR do you use? What Defensive stat or stats? what baserunning stat?

I would never base anything on one specific thing. Look at everything. Examine everything. Watch the games. Pick your favorite.

Posey is a great choice right now and part of it is this is a comeback year from a serious injury. He's a catcher for a division winning team that has a crappy offense. He leads the league in OPS+. BP has some interesting catcher defense studies. I'd look at those too.

That's not a bad start to an evaluation.

I wasn't using those numbers to prove anything. Knobler threw out the "WAR has Wright as better than Posey LOL" tweet, which demonstrates any combination of: (1) a complete lack of understanding of the statistic, (2) a desire to completely ignore obvious factors at play, and/or (3) a desire to remove an important degree of context (which is that the players are separated by an insignificant amount).

Braun, McCutchen, Wright and Posey are all within 0.4 WAR of each other. Picking one over the other based on that metric is splitting hairs regardless of how much you like WAR. If you want offense-only rate stats, Braun has the best wRC+ in the NL (McCutchen is 2nd). McCutchen's the best baserunner of those four. But he, Braun and Wright play less demanding positions than Posey. Each of them have their merits. Posey should probably win imo but it's not like it's a slam dunk for anybody

edit: what Richmond said, pretty much

Oh yeah, I know.

I wasn't addressing your post specifically. just throwing out ideas.

I'm pretty sure we are all on the same sheet of music here.

The MVP race this season is pretty awesome as there are a bunch of good candidates.

Gotcha.

BTW, I'm really getting sick of the ESPN talking heads and the like who trash saber peeps in the Miggy vs. Trout discussions. Even though RBIs sucks as an individual qualitative stat and average isn't much better, the Triple Crown is still really freaking cool. And despite the stats individually sucking, a player ranking in the top 3 in all of the Triple Crown stats means that he is having an awesome season.
