They don't like having to say that of course they know that the current era is great and they have a lot to appreciate about the current run of Phillies teams every time they state that objective analysis tells them that the future is grim.

There is a divide between the objective fans and the elitist fans who are older and grew up with the teams in the late '80s and post-'93 '90s who say you should be extra appreciative of the current teams.

I think I heard a comment about 2012 being the last year the Phillies are going to be competitive.

I know the ESPN 500 rankings aren't meant to be the be-all, end-all, but I have a hard time believing Hunter Pence is 25 spots behind a pitcher who hasn't thrown a single pitch in the Major Leagues (Darvish)

I wonder if the Phils aren't putting some of this out there deliberately, to counter the fans' sense of entitlement to the Division championship.

Yes, Ruben Amaro purposely sniped Ryan Howard from the press box last October and we gave Chase Utley poison that would destroy his knees

This doesn't make any sense does it? WTF is an elitist fan? Someone who disagrees with him (them)?

I also didn't understand the use of elitist in that context. If anything they were positioning themselves as the elites who are able to looking at things objectively. It had something to do with other people telling them that they shouldn't be pessimistic and therefore they were elitists (I guess) which is funny since the article specifically said that other people should not be optimistic.

But the main problem with their discussion was that the article contained nothing objective. It was a description of the writer's subjective experience as a Phillies fan these days. They didn't mention that he characterized his current emotional state as nothing but rage. There was no objective justification of that heightened negative emotional state. Their discussion on the podcast did not justify the use of rage, which was a central theme of the article. But when David Cohen reacts to this over the top emotional negativity, their response is that they are just doing objective analysis. So it is a bit of a bait and switch. They do objective analysis then have an extreme emotional reaction not justified by the objective analysis, someone criticizes the emotional reaction, they respond by claiming that the critiques must be based on emotions because we are just telling you what the objective analysis concludes.

I should point out that Mr. I'm not optimistic and you shouldn't be either said that he wasn't particularly proud of the article but he didn't really explain why.

So ESPN considers us the 8th best team in MLB in their power rankings, seems they've been drinking the world-ending koolaid.

You'd get made fun of too if you hit 60 HRs while sitting on a stool.
