Yeah, he was a September callup that year. I remember reading about him in the prospects section of the media guides of the early '80s.

I think Lieberthal was a September callup in 93.

Charlie should be a blogger on one of the Saber dork sites. He's got the "playoffs are a crap shoot" thing and BABIP luck stuff down:

"Baseball is a funny game," Manuel said. "You look at Bobby Cox and everybody says he's a sure Hall of Fame guy, and why is he going into the Hall of Fame? Mostly because he won those 14 division titles in a row, that's why. And you look at that and you say how come he didn't win more World Series? Because there's a ton of luck in baseball, and every day is different, and you react different every day, and that's the part that's hard to explain.

More BABIP and swinging out of the strike zone O-swing stuff (talking about his Indians in the Series vs. the Braves):

"If they ever show it, watch it, because the first three or four innings, we smoked some balls, and every one we smoked was right at people, and all of a sudden we started chasing balls out of the strike zone and Glavine kept feeding us more pitches off the plate," Manuel said. "What happens is that's kind of how the game goes on that day, and you say, well, why didn't you reel them in or harness them and stuff like that. It's kind of hard to do. Really that's almost impossible."

Someone should ask him about WARs and UZRs.

Not sure if that's the transcript, but he said all that and more on Tuesday's Daily News Live. Should still be On Demand.

The little Phillies page-a-day desk calendar with a gem today:

"Which Phillies pitcher was on the mound for the final out of the 2008 World Series, in which Rays left fielder Carl Crawford popped out?"

Uh....

My son found it on Reddit. I'm a newbie there, so I don't know my way around. I'll get him to track it down.

I got it from a Baseball Prospectus article. Pay wall issues make linking a problem.

Somewhere, in the No Howard Extension Universe, there's a press conference going on announcing Prince Fielder as the new Phillies first baseman.

Just saw a Q and A with T-Mac and Rube.

Highlights included him saying LF is Mayberry's position to lose and that although he prefers Brown in AAA all season, he could play his way onto the roster.

One potentially interesting nugget was him saying D'Arnaud was "the one who got away" because it's vital to be strong up the middle and you hate to give up SS, CF, C prospects. Then he said "that's what we've had here" and named Rollins, Utley, Chooch "and others." Not Victorino, which seemed weird in the moment.

Had to give up one of Brown or D'Arnaud to complete that deal

Big grin about Sebastian Valle's -- "VIE-YAY"' -- power potential

Oh, he also unwinds with "movies late at night" and went out of his way to say he disliked Moneyball the movie -- "unrealistic." Phils "err on the side of scouting" but do take numbers into consideration.
