Regarding 1964, the Phillies built their big lead by feasting on the Mets, Cubs and the Colt 45's. The Phils were 40-14 vs. those clubs. They finished the year playing Milwaukee; St. Looie and the Reds. The Phils had the best record in the league vs. losing teams -- 60-30. They played three of the best teams in the league down the stretch.

And Art Mahaffey had talent. But he had a bad arm by 1964.

After Frank Thomas got hurt, the Phils had terrible production from 1B using guys like Vic Power and Costen Shockley. Before they picked up Thomas they used the terrible John Herrnstein and the washed up Roy Seivers at 1B. Not getting anything out of a premium offensive position hurt that club too.

If Amaro doesn't add a lefty off the bench by the deadline, the quick release of Jack Cust becomes even more mind-boggling. It doesn't make sense. Would it have hurt if he were a September call-up so we can see what he can do?
