Nice, the Phillies version of Peterson and Kekich. Good thing Kris Benson sucked or Werth would've nailed Anna too.

alrighty. ive just been doing research.

i think we should trade for brandon wood.

hes out of options. he doesnt play smallball, hence, scioscia hates him.

he just turned 26. hes never hit in the majors.

but he has plus plus raw power. if he makes consistent contact, he can hit 40 HR per year in the majors. defensively, all of his samples are small, but he was off the charts good at 3B in 2010 after being really poor at 3B in 2009. He's not a SS anymore, but played the position in the minors, and could probably play there in a pinch.

his last "full" season in the minors was 2009, where he logged 428 PA at AAA at age 24

8.4% BB rate, 20.7% K rate, 22 HR, .264 ISO, .387 wOBA

his career minor league line is .284/.352/.536.

The question is, can Chuck fix his swing? Hes a little young to be in the "werth dumpster dive" category, but the star has sufficiently dimmed on his prospect status, and he didn't grab a full time job last season.

maybe a fresh start gets him out of it?

The Angels could use Blanton. As it stands now, Callaspo, Aybar, Izturis and Kendrick are sharing time at 3 positions. Wood is a distant 4th in that rotation.

We could probably get Wood for him straight up.

A career .169 career hitter (450 AB/145K/13 BB/OPS+ 22) straight up for only Joe Blanton? How lucky can you get?

I like the Wood suggestion, although I would think we could get a little more than just him for Blanton. What do I know.

I like similar gameplans for other 3B busts Alex Gordon and Chris Davis. Between the three, one's gotta have a career in them, right? Love to see the Phillies make a move for one of these guys.

moving a commodity we don't need, who makes $8.5M, for a prospect with a lot of potential who makes the league minimum in 2011 is actually a lot more valuable than you think. if the stories are to believed, we don't have room to add payroll. most people outside of phillies fandom think blanton is overpaid, and with starters going down and no one knocking the Phillies door down for Blanton (that we know of), and no one seemingly wanting to pick up the entire salary after Lee signed, I think we can assume that Blanton isn't bringing us a bona fide stud back.

Wood just turned 26. If you're going to laugh him off after 450 MLB ABs, spread across 4 seasons, I guess that's your call.

I do think a backup 3B, who may just benefit from regular playing time, which he'd get if Utley needs surgery, plus $8M in salary room to go shopping in July when we need a high leverage reliever or another outfielder, would be a pretty smart deal.

I love Blanton. But his value to this team, as constructed, is marginal. If we lose Utley, lets say you replace him with Valdez. Who do you replace Valdez with? I'd rather have a righthanded 3B with a near .900 OPS in his minor league career over Josh Barfield. If Wood figures it out and takes off, you're looking at a .340-.350 OB% with 30+ HR potential. Which means if Utley does have to switch positions, you can move Polanco back to 2B, and you now have your 3B, who will still be making pennies in 2012.

So, yeah

when the Mets release Castillo, we sign him and watch him have a career year.

Problem solved.

I hear you in theory. The problem is the specifics, i.e., Wood. It's not just that he's failed when given the opportunity, it's how bad he's looked doing it. The only reason he's got only 450 AB in the bigs is because he's just been so darn horrible. At age 26, having been given legitimate shot after shot, he's gone from prospect to suspect. I mean, 13 walks and and 145 K's in 450 AB? It's hard to be that bad. Even if one were to invoke Mike Schmidt's sub-.200 rookie season, at least Schmidt showed the ability to get lots of BB.

Yes, it would be great to free up some payroll. But Blanton has more value than a guy who's as likely to be DFA'd as he is to turn things around. Blanton is a solid, proven, league-average starter and is only 30 years old. That's the sort of guy a contender will trade, say, an Adrian Cardenas and Josh Outman for. Just because the Phils have the luxury of having 4 great starters doesn't mean you give Blanton away for a total flier.

So, the idea of turning Blanton into a decent 3B or 2B is sound. But Wood is petrifying.

Mike Schmidt on WMMR right now talking about Jimmy Rollins. Says Rollins, if he put his mind to it, could be a great leadoff hitter like Juan Pierre.

Schmidt is either the world's greatest troll, or he's actually suffering from Stockholm Syndrome after his years of mistreatment by the Philly fans/press.
