Jim Jackson says a bunch of Phils will be at Tuesday's Flyers/Lightning game since they have a suite at the St. Pete Times Forum

I was out running today, and to try to get my mind off the pain, I started thinking about the Phillies. The rotation, of course, is mind bendingly good, and everyone is counting on that to lead the Phils to post-season triumphs. But, I thought to myself as I was jogging around the block, we should not forget that the Phils have been a formidable offensive threat, and even last year with significant injuries to key players the team managed to score 772 runs. Which is a lot. In fact, 2nd behind only the Reds in the NL.

Yeah, Werth is gone, and his production needs to be replaced. But it sure does seem like 105+ wins is not beyond reach.

If Kendrick is worth $2.45 million to us to pitch middle relief and/or hang out and wait for someone with much more talent to get hurt, is it reasonable to assume that another team might believe he's worth that much to take a rotation turn every five days?

Well guys like Sean O'Sullivan and Armando Galarraga who are comparably crappy recently had trade value. But the teams acquiring them may have represented the full extent of the market for Kendrickish guys

I think I'd still rather pay Millwood 3mm than trade for Kendrick if I was a GM, but once he signs somewhere and there is an injury or two, maybe could unload him on someone

What's the smart person view on how much control a pitcher has over his strand rate? The league average is around 72%. It's certainly not any kind of independent skill, but it seems intuitive that better pitchers (particularly higher K pitchers) would have better strand rates. Also, I would think pitchers that pitch better out of the stretch would have an advantage. OTOH, there is the bullpen impact.

What does the research say? Halladay was 82% last year but has been between 75 and 82% in 5 of the last 6 seasons. Wainwright is 77% for his career.
I know what you're asking yourself and the answer is yes. I have a nick name for my penis. Its called the Octagon, but I also nick named my testes - my left one is James Westfall and my right one is Doctor Kenneth Noisewater.

I hate TMac with a passion, but he's nowhere near as infuriating when he's not yelling for no particular reason.

Here are some ideas on that. The first discussion thread is basically more analysis than I could get through

http://www.insidethebook.com/ee/index.p ... uick_eras/

And then here is a quicker article about the slight correlation between have a lower xFIP and a better strand rate

http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/artic ... weeks-ago/

It seems to me logically that guys who a) give up fewer XBHs and runners in general, b) can K batters more often than most in a RISP situation, and/or c) have strong groundball rates to induce DPs should do better than those who lack any of those skills in when men on base. There is also the idea of whether some guys are just less comfortable out of the stretch, hurting their overall peripherals (Javy Vazquez and AJ Burnett are two examples I've seen discussed)
