doesn't Cal have a solid program?

California state budget cuts to education hit them hard. Plus Title IX compliance.

Too bad Doug's name reflects his lifetime earnings in MLB.

Speedy glove man who can't hit and bats lefty. Will be 31 this season. LHV filler.

MLBN calls us the best team in baseball even better than the Red Sox.

Ill tell you what.

I think if this offer was made, I'd accept it

Michael Young ($16M)
Alexi Ogando ($450K)
$20M

for

Ibanez ($11.5M)
Blanton ($8.5M)

Young is owed $48M for 2011, 2012, and 2013, and I think $9M of that is deferred.

His 2010 line looks poor, after a nice 2009, but his .284 BABIP in the 2nd half was a bit below normal. His career BABIP is .335. He had an .831 OPS in the first half.

The big question is, can he play LF. He's never played the OF. He's a decent athlete, and his arm is strong enough. If Pat Burrell can play LF, then Young can.

In the above deal, we also get Alexi Ogando, a league minimum reliever that throws 99. Would Texas trade him? Probably not. But he's not prospect age anymore because of the whole VISA issue and lost seasons. And they have a ton of arms coming.

I guess part of me just assumes that everyone that comes here will see their performance tick up, especially guys who are talented. If we get an '09 Michael Young season, he's an upgrade over Ibanez. And the chance of a collapse is lower, when you consider the age.

The deal would save us about $3.5M this year. He would be owed $32M, 6M deferred from 2012-2013. The $20M kicked in to the deal means we'd be paying him basically $6M per for 2 years. He offers you insurance at 2B, 3B, SS in a pinch too.

Texas probably wont do this. But its unsure how eager they are to get him out of town. Other teams don't seem to be interested at all, even where it looks to be a good fit.

In the above scenario, my personal favorite Vance Worley would take the #5 spot for $450K.

I think the big hangup with Texas is likely the cash Rube would demand. From what I've read, the big hangup with trading Young on the Texas side is that no one is offering a serviceable bat in return, but Ibanez would fill that need for them. From the Rangers' point of view it makes sense - they get a comparable bat that isn't under long term money, and it gets them out of a big contract for an unhappy player that isn't in their long term plans.

•There's a belief that Pedro Martinez could pitch the final months of the season if, as one American League GM says, he finds "the right fit." Cafardo speculates that the Phillies could be an interesting option if they end up trading Joe Blanton.

Yeah Blanton hasn't won any cy youngs or World Series MVP's so it makes sense.

I'm pretty sure we can throw in Doc Gooden as our 5th starter and it wouldn't matter much... and he'd give us quality starts
