The Phillies and righthanded reliever Ryan Madson have reached agreement on a three-year contract extension, The Inquirer learned today. The deal, which is pending a physical exam, is believed to be for $12 million, with incentives.

Going by the Fangraphs values for pitchers *standard discretion applies*:

Ryan was worth 6 mil last year and about 3.74/year since 2004.

very nice! I actually think it's a little too rich of a deal but who the hell cares?! I find it funny that the deal hinges upon him passing a physical.

Remember when CD [this is for you, dajafi] was saying that if the Phillies didn't let Madson become a starter, Boras would never let him sign a long terms deal here after he became a FA?

I can't believe a Boras guy, coming off such a huge off season, didn't go to free agency. I think this says a ton about Ryan.

I'm going to start crafting my application for the position of curator of the soft-core wing of the Ryan Madson Pornothological Institute. Woody, you mind if I use you as a reference?

yea there was really nothing like watching Madson hit 98 at the end of the year, then mix in his ever improving changeup... he really might turn into something special...

For comparison sake, Ryan's top BR comp through age 27, Bob Wickman, made over 14 million in his final 3 seasons (age 36-38).
