I also remember when Reggie Taylor was going to be an All-Star, Chris Roberson was the center fielder of the future, etc.

I think he should be our right handed bat off the bench when he's not starting. Rube should totally give him that contract.

it seems gratuitous and evil empire like to have 2 $4M relievers on top of your $13M closer, but that was before we were WFC.

I doubt Madson's deal is straight $4MM/yr., but we'll see.

As for Thome's deal:

Contract:

signed 6-year deal worth $85M- + he receives a $10M signing bonus of which $2.5M is payable in 2006 and salaries of $9.5M in 2003, $10.5M in 2004, $11.5M in 2005, $12.5M in 2006, $14M in 2007 and $14M in 2008- + the deal includes a team option for 2009 worth $13M or a $3M buyout- + bonuses he has received: $50K for 2004 All-Star- + he receives a complete NO-TRADE clause- + the 2009 option becomes guaranteed with 1,100 PA combined during the 2007 and 2008 seasons- + waived no-trade caluse to approve a deal to CHW on 11/23/05- + $22M of remaining $46M on his contract at time of trade that sends him to CHW is paid by PHI ($5.5M each season in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009)

Maybe Boras and Madson learned from the Kyle Lohse situation. I know things have ultimately worked out for Lohse, but Madson, who let's face it struggled until he found his niche as a set up guy probably doesn't have quite the upside.

It seems like a lot of players see the economic writing on the wall and are taking the security years offer them. '10 might very well be an even worse market for free agents than '09. And I would be rather surprised if the Yankees are going to be anywhere near as active next off-season as they are this offseason.

So, why did he turn down seemingly the exact same deal before? My first thought was that Simpsons episode where they go to the box factory, and Bart tries to imagine going somewhere better.

Principal Skinner "Children, instead of going to the box factory today, we'll be going to...the box factory."
"My hip is fucked up. I'm going to Africa for two weeks."

Just because he didn't get 'saves' doesn't make his role any less important. Good deal for a good price based on what good relievers are going for, IMO

Of course, relievers can be touchy creatures and can come out of nowhere one year and then back to obscurity the next. I'm unsure if I'd give any reliever more than a two-year deal, but the Phillies don't compete in a vacuum. I might've given him a little more for two years if we could've gotten more flexibility, but I guess he would've been gone then.

The article mentions their are incentives in the deal, so they may have made the difference in his decision to take the deal.

My guess is they are fairly significant and based upon appearances or IP.
