probably involving the worst stat in sports - the Hold?

Also might be saves, on the theory that if Lidge goes down, Madson might have to step in and close.

Wow, I'm pretty shocked. Even with the downturn in the economy, I can't believe he's not testing the FA market. If he's anything like the 2nd half of 2008, he'd get more than 4 million per on the open market, especially if he can get a closer job, which most guys want if they can get it.

I'm starting to think we have a bunch of guys who want to stay together and are willing to take a little less to do so.

Nice job, Ruben. (Man, that was hard to type)

ESPN article

The deal is unusual because Madson is a Scott Boras client. And Boras clients rarely sign extensions that give away their free-agent years.

But Madson has spent his whole career in the Phillies' organization, lives in the Philadelphia area year-round and pushed for a contract that would keep him in Philadelphia beyond this season.

Another, more contemporary, comparison:
The Chicago Cubs and right-hander Kevin Gregg agreed at $4.2 million

I'll take Madson.

If his mid-upper 90's fastball is for real, I'd like to see him get another crack at starting.

Why? So his velocity can dip back down and his 2 pitch arsenal can be exposed?

With the Hamels, Dobbs, and now Madson deals Mr. Amaro Jr. is showing he very well might be competent after all.

He's re-signing players who want to be here and are coming off the high of a WFC. Let's not induct him in the HOF just yet.

Indeed, Gregg's only value for us would be so he can't pitch against us anymore.

When he was throwing low 90's as a reliever and high 80's as a starter it was a problem. If he is throwing mid-high 90's as a reliever and mid-low 90's as a starter it wouldnt be, IMO.

His curve isnt that bad. He was always projected as a starter before having success as a reliever, no?.

I thought his curve was bad enough that he actually stopped throwing it. I could be wrong though.

From fangraphs

He threw his curve about 17% of the time in 05 and 06. Only 0.5% in 07, and 3.5% this past year. He's replaced it with a cutter.

Since he'll be staying around, I think it's time for someone to make an official "Bridge to Lidge" graemlin.
"I tell all kids not to use that word. If they're 29 and they win the World Series, I think they can say that.
But I definitely would say to all the kids out there, 'Kids, it's a bad word. Don't say it. And I'm dead serious.' "

Wow, that's quite a shock.

Did not think that was gonna happen, I was already resigning myself to top setup man Chad Durbin.

Now the Bridge and the Lidge are solid for the rest of our three-year window.

I think he's showing that he has strengths and weaknesses. He's now done nice deals for Eyre, Hamels and Madson (I suspect Werth is next on his list), although Moyer seems to have outfoxed him (those crafty lefties!). On the talent evaluation/best fit front, not so much.

Madson will never start again.

If anything he'll close if Lidge gets hurt or if he ends up on another team.

Hes not a starter.

Didn't even hint at that. All I suggested is that he may actually be competent, not legendary for crying out loud.
