More Dom Brown/Mike Stanton big athlete types please.

I wouldn't mind Kyle Bellamy tomorrow. I'm not a huge fan of his (he's got a funky sidearm delivery despite being 6'5), but he was dominant this year and could conceivably be in the bullpen sometime next season.

No chance though.

I like how they list San Diego State, then the team, then the fans being excited over the pick. They list it in order of biggest group of people to lowest.

Well the Phils increased their payroll ~25% this year so based on the reaction of the people who know what they are talking about, and the posted links, unfortunately it looks like that extra $ was taken out of the draft budget.

Hopefully when Eaton, Jenkins, and Thome (please tell me we're not paying him anymore after this season- it feels like we've been paying him for 10 years) come off of the books, they can invest on premium players that we'll have the money to go over slot in the 1st round on a non-Boras client (yeah right but a guy can dream, right?). It would also be nice if they could actually hit now like Cardenas instead of trying to turn an athlete into a baseball player.

With that being said, there is no way that we should give up on Hewitt, Gose, and Collier yet despite their terrible showings so far (I'm sure there are more athlete types that they drafted recently but I can't think of them). I'll give them another 2-3 seasons before I'm ready to call them busts but then again I'm more optimistic/patient than most.

Any chance Gose goes back to pitching? IIRC he throws in the 90's but he preferred to play OF.

i can't give up on hewitt since i had no faith in him to start with. collier is struggling but is only 19 and playing in the sal. gose has close to 40 steals already and is a plus defender in center. i don't think they have any desire to move him to the mound

You hate to get too hung up on rankings (BA and PGCross) but it would be nice to see the Phillies get some guys in Rounds 4-10 who were more highly thought of so you're not left with the feeling that they pizzed away the entire draft.

Dugan hit 8 home runs in 95 at bats that projects to 52 home runs in 600 ab's :Sarcasm:

Re: Gose- Michael Bourn redux? Wow he really might steal 70 bases this year. A .306 OBP and 10 BB in 212 AB is pretty discouraging but I'm really hoping we catch lightning in a bottle with one of these kids- hopefully all of them but you have to be realistic.

Was Dom Brown a toolsy prosp-ject as well? Maybe he's the one.

Here's another question. If the best case scenario happens and Brown turns into a .900 - 1.000 OPS type of guy and is a perennial all star, is it worth missing on all of the Golson types that were or probably will be busts for one guy like Brown? From a financial standpoint I'm going to say yes simply because we'll have a 15 million dollar player for peanuts for a few years. And just so no one goes back 15-20 years, we're talking about the last couple of seasons- please no mention of Jeff Jackson and Reggie Taylor.

Here's the thing though, Dom Brown wasn't a no hit guy coming out of HS, he was a football/baseball guy who was raw from lack of reps, not lack of ability. Also, I don't think it's fair to lump him into this top range group. Take all the athlete types you want, but please do so at the appropriate time in the draft....we're spending premium picks on these "make a wish" guys where we should be landing guys with potential and a reasonable chance of reaching that potential. Dom Brown was a 20th round pick, that's the range we should be taking these flyers at, not in the top 5 rounds when there are players who are actually good at baseball, right now, available.

Do any of you think these first two selections might be linked to the potential trade of a Brown, Collier or Gose? Maybe they want to restock on toolsey athletes.

I guess I should have looked it up- for some reason I could have sworn he was a Top 3-5 round pick. It's hard to disagree with you from a strategical standpoint, but you also have to look at it from the other way- I don't know about this year but I definitely remember Golson, Hewitt, Collier, and Gose all given consensus 1st round grades so they certainly wouldn't have been available in the 20th round. Any time you get a stud like Brown in the 20th round it takes A LOT of luck.

Brown's not getting traded unless it's Halladay and Gose/Collier have no real value still in lowA. Taylor I could see being traded but it's still not an excuse to take that punk Hudson.

Wait, so now Brown can only be traded for Halladay, who's not getting traded (ever) and Hudson is a "punk"?
