Conlin on Amaro/Arbuckle

Kinda takes a shot at Arbuckle. Interesting.

So were any other candidates even considered or interviewed for the job? Or were they absolutely 100% certain that Amaro was the most talented person available? I guess that's the part that worries me, that the job was just kind of handed to him (after years of service, I understand). And even more concerning to me is that we all saw this coming the moment Pat Gillick was hired; and it wasn't because Amaro's obvious talent and boyish charm. It had more to do with "that's just the way the Phillies do things."

I understand that this is baseball and there's only 30 such jobs, but in most other jobs, if you've been working at an assistant position for several years under 2 different bosses and the higher ups know you, when the boss retires, you're the natural replacement and they generally don't even interview other people. I'm not sure why anyone's surprised at all.

Not sure what you mean. Are you suggesting that "the way the Phillies do things" might be correlated with winning the World Series but didn't actually cause them to win the World Series?

I'll put it this way: In some respects, I believe the Phillies happened to win a World Series in spite of themselves. Of course they're not the first and certainly won't be the last to do so.

Prior to this season, would you have said that the Phillies, as an organization, consistently do what is necessary to compete for the World Series? I don't think many of us would have. That's really all I'm saying.

You're obviously going to miss with some picks, but you're gonna make some good ones. Arbuckle made some damn good ones, especially Utley and Howard. However, Conlin is going to blame him for drafting Drew? Was that his decision? And he's going to blame him for Gavin Floyd too, who's turned out to be a pretty good pitcher after his exile from Philadelphia? I can't agree with Conlin too much there.

Reading that column I got the feeling Colin is/was close with the Amaro family. The whole I covered his dad, watched his kid grow up type of thing
and now he's sticking up for the kid. Sort of goes against what I'd expect of Conlin though.

Yeah, Conlin pretty much wrote out a laundry list of players that Arbuckle picked that have worked out and cherry picked two that didn't. That doesn't make much of a case against the man.

But we won the World Series, so $#@! it.

I don't know if the Phils brass know that the literate phan base feel this way or not,, but perhaps they made the move with this timing knowing that a lot of people will say "well, we just won -- f it" ... the dangersous side of winning it all for this ownership/management group is that now they feel vindicated and justified. I just hope i live long enough to see more WS Champions.... 28 years was a long drought....

Pat Gillick, who recently fulfilled his three-year contract as general manager of the Phillies, will remain with the club in an advisory capacity, senior vice president & general manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. announced today.

"I am very happy that Pat has opted to stay on board with us," said Amaro. "His knowledge of the game is invaluable and his innumerable resources will be a tremendous asset to any team's Baseball Operations department."

"I tell all kids not to use that word. If they're 29 and they win the World Series, I think they can say that.
But I definitely would say to all the kids out there, 'Kids, it's a bad word. Don't say it. And I'm dead serious.' "

Ruben Amaro is Jewish? I didn't know that. or, I think I heard it once before, but forgot it. So it's like its news to me.
