have you looked at their career ops versus blanton? i'm seeing four regulars hitting over 930.

i'm not sure hamels, myers, or moyer needed scouting. hamels and myers are just good, and i suspect that moyer does his own homework.

and pena owned moyer. except for last night.

its the world series. those numbers dont matter.

if blanton throws strikes, hes going to be fine

Four batters who have 11,7, 6 and 6 career AB's against Blanton with 1 HR? I look at the larger body of work against the whole lineup he'll be facing. The fact that 4 hitters in that lineup have combined for a total of 4 XBH lifetime against Blanton doesn't concern me much when you consider that the team has a lifetime .271 OBP against him. I don't see how that all adds up to "an uncomfortably large chance of him giving up 8 runs in two innings." If you assume he pitches 6 innings and do the numbers, it looks like around 6 hits (4 singles and 2 XBH), 1 or 2 BB and 5 K's.

I find it impossible to believe that Hamels, Myers and Moyer didn't consult the scouting reports and didn't benefit from them.

the sentence "that's too a small to be a valid sample size" could not apply more to this sentence.

the four regulars you speak of:

1) Longoria: .333/.333/.667, OPS=1.000...in THREE ABs

He hit a double down the line in May. He also grounded out and flied out. That's not a history of dominance against Blanton, it's a double.

2) Iwamura: .333/.333/.667, OPS=1.000...in SIX ABs

He hit a triple down the line. He's also struck out twice in six at-bats. That's not a history of dominance.

3) Pena: .571/.667/.714, OPS=1.381...in NINE PAs

He hit a single and two doubles. He also walked twice (once intentionally) and struck out once. Not dominance.

4) Upton: .273/.385/.545, OPS=.930...in 13 PAs

He's also struck him out 5 times in the 13 times he faced him. That's not dominance.

The four guys that dominated him supposedly have three unintentional walks and eight strikeouts against him too. None of them have homeruns. If the three things that pitchers control are BB, K, and HR, it looks like Blanton is pretty much fine against those guys.

Phun Phacts Phor Phox:

Q1: Prior to Pena & Longoria, when was the last time in World Series play that a team's #3 & 4 hitters went 0 for the first 3 games of the series?

A1: I'm guessing never.

Q2: When will we hear this phact on a Fox broadcast?

A2: (See answer 1).

yeah. i am going with my dad. it's one of those things i just thought i should do with him. bought the tickets this summer after i was finished playing tommy up in CT. i'd much rather be going to the game with my dad, though. we'll see what inning they're in when the concert's over. if there's still game left to be played, we'll find our way in.

The sick (good?) thing is that there's probably no way you could even do a swap out in the parking lot.

All those fancy numbers don't mean anything. Joe Sheehan and Keith Law and Jim Rome say the American League is much better than the NL and any AL team will win the Series.

Even though the Phillies have an American League type offense they have no chance against the greatest pitching staff ever. Look how great Garza is. And Big Game James will pitch at least 5 innings in his next start -- maybe even 5 1/3.

Sonnastine is like Sandy Koufax and Bob Gibson combined. He's that good.

Plus the Rays get all the breaks and the umpires are for the Rays and so are Tim McCarver and Joe Buck.

The Phils have no chance -- none.

Brad Lidge is so scared, he didn't even pitch last night.

The Rays have an OPS of 6.2 million against Clay Condrey.

The guy [Sonnanstine] is a winner. A guy like Andy to get drafted in the first place takes excellent scouting as far as I'm concerned. You have to read into a guy's heart. And you get people who always win and continue to win; it shouldn't surprise anybody.

Seriously, every single Rays starter has been described as their best starter so far, and every single Rays starter was less gooder than the Phillies starter.

By Jim Caple[/url]

Last night: a five man infield. Tonight? probably nothing can beat the genius of a five man infield, although Maddon is so smart I'm sure he'll come up with something. Ooooooh and Jim Caple got a tour of Joe Maddon's office!!!
