It says the first pitch will not be at 8 p.m., which we knew when MLB set the schedule for the series.

edit: not fair, he updated the entry. now it says Maddon's expecting a 9:30 window.

Just spoke to my 80-something year old great aunt. She's psyched, and nervous. Even though she woulda seen the phils in 80, I figure the team owes her another world series.

Wiz, You can get a good night's sleep, get up in the AM and still catch the first pitch.

I'll tell you what, facing the Phillies lineup, compared to facing the Red Sox lineup, the Tigers lineup, or the Yankees lineup, you get a bit of a break with the Phillies lineup.

The Phillies are aware of Matt Garza's comments that it will be easier to face their lineup than the Yankees' or the Red Sox's. But Ryan Howard wasn't about to engage Garza in a war of words. He'd prefer to let his bat do the talking.

hate to say it, but gotta say it (again): i like blanton going forward, but his chances of success today are slim and none, and slim has a bus ticket out of town. he is going to be flame-thrower-in-a-grain-silo torched. the rays absolutely love hitting this guy.

our only hope is happ coming in soon enough, but soon enough is probably the first rays batter. at least moyer did his job so that happ is at least available today, and a win today is a lot less crucial than it would have been otherwise.

thank you jamie moyer. you are a philly hero for the ages.

Blanton's not getting hit any harder than Sonnanstine. That's the key.

If Blanton goes 5, giving up 4-5 runs, and we're up 7-5... I can live with that.

Agreed. I can live with just about any situation which puts Blanton's first Phillies loss in 2009.

well, yeah... but there is an uncomfortably large chance of him giving up 8 runs in two innings if he doesn't look bad enough soon enough to put happ in before irreparable damage is done. plus i'm not so sure the two offenses are on an equal footing for this game. the rays have seen a lot more of blanton than the phillies have of sonnanstine. and the phils seem to have big problems getting good scouting reports on the al teams.

of course we should still watch and hope... this is baseball. but i really think that today, rather than game 2 or 3, is where we are at the biggest disadvantage. against an nl team that wouldn't be the case. but against an al team that hits blanton well? ugh.

happ would definitely be a better option this time. too bad that there is no chance of him getting the start.

The Rays are .200/.255/.267 (.522 OPS) against Phils pitching in this series. In 3 games they have a total of 4 XBH and 7 BB. Current Rays hitters are .233/.271/.344 (.615) against Blanton lifetime. Does that mean Blanton won't struggle? Of course not. But the Phils seem to have done a great job both scouting and executing against the Rays and there's nothing in Blanton's history against these Rays hitters to suggest he'll struggle.

I actually feel confident about Blanton tonight.

If he can locate well, he'll give us a quality start.

have you looked at their career ops versus blanton? i'm seeing four regulars hitting over 930.

i'm not sure hamels, myers, or moyer needed scouting. hamels and myers are just good, and i suspect that moyer does his own homework.
