Phillies vs Dodgers: NLCS Discussion

Postby stevelxa476 » Mon Oct 20, 2008 07:44:20

from imdb:
Actress Mila Kunis' passion for baseball almost got her ejected from the Los Angeles Dodgers' play-off game against the Philadelphia Phillies last week when her cursing upset the parents of a 10-year-old boy.

Kunis, a Dodgers fan, was so upset by the efforts of her team, who were knocked out of baseball's post-season by the Phillies, she couldn't hold her tongue.

And she had some apologising to do when one family, sitting within earshot of her, were offended by her bad language.

The actress explains, "The kid turns around and his parents turn around and I was like, 'I'm so sorry, but come on.'

"They were like, 'Ok, weirdo.'"

Kunis insists cool Dodgers fans could learn a lot from trash-talking New York Yankees supporters: "It's not necessarily that I'm for the Yankees... but the fans are so amazing... I feel at home, they're my people.

"Everybody at Dodgers Stadium... was on their BlackBerries.
Yes son. I'm the best mono-thingy guy there ever was.

From last Wednesday's LA Times

Dodgers fans have long been known for their arrive-late-and-leave-early insouciance. Lately, they have struggled to shake a newer reputation for intemperance.

Many say it's largely undeserved, and there is no disputing that security at the stadium has been up and arrests down. But even as they celebrate this season's trip to the National League Championship Series -- an unexpected run that could end with tonight's Game 5 at the stadium -- the Dodgers faithful remain blue over a perceived rise in booze-fueled hooliganism, a problem that team spokesman Charles Steinberg conceded "is not solved."

"It is a high priority," Steinberg said Tuesday. "It breaks your heart when the smallest of numbers seem to ruin it for some people."

He added Dodgers owners Frank and Jamie McCourt are "focused" on ridding the stands of trouble-makers.

"It's a family ownership and they want a family environment," Steinberg said. "You don't throw your hands in the air, and say, 'Oh well?' "

At Monday's game, the Dodgers security staff had its hands full, especially in the late innings, as blood-alcohol levels climbed. Much of the unwanted action was at the "hot corners" -- the stands near the foul poles -- and in the outfield pavilions.

"People are rowdy," said Jose Sanchez, 35, of Burbank, who had just witnessed a scuffle between two men; both were ejected. "There are no limits to what they can say or do."

A few rows away, Steve Goss, 52, said: "I saw two fights already because people were wearing red."

The Buena Park resident pointed at a friend wearing a Phillies shirt. "I've got to stay with him to make sure he's OK," Goss said. "It's a small minority, but I've noticed it's gotten nastier."

I know he's just being a homer, but I still wonder how that even applies. The Phillies had 8 more wins during the regular season, so he can't mean that. They certainly didn't outplay the Phillies during the series otherwise they would have done more than beat a 45 year old pitcher pitching his worst game in a while. I mean, the Phillies are the WORLD CHAMPIONS.

I just wanted to type that.

Also, the Dodgers were 40-32 (.556) when playing their crappy division, and were 44-46 (.489) against everyone else. Meanwhile, the Phillies were 41-31 (.569) against their division and 51-39 (.567) against everyone else.

I guess the Dodgers were good against the NL 79-68 (.537), but the Phillies were way better 88-59 (.599). I completely forgot we sucked against the AL during the regular season. It's funny that we won 4 out of 5 games in the WS and we only won 4 games in 15 games against the AL during the season.

And this year they get to play the AL East, with its three playoff-caliber teams, a good Jays team, and, well... the Orioles.

In a much tougher division, no less.

If this guy thinks that the first four months of the season don't count and the Dodgers were better than the Phillies because of Manny, well, he's still wrong. In August and September, the Phillies went 33-21; the Dodgers went 30-24.

Ha, I knew their division was bad, but I forgot just how bad it was. The Cardinals were in 4TH PLACE but still finished 2 games better than the Dodgers. So, that guy is right, the team with the 7th or 8th best record in the league was certainly better than the 2nd.

Further grist for my old daydream of a deal centered around Howard for Loney and Kemp...
