Jimmy Rollins is having an historic season

Jim Callis: (2:59 PM ET ) Rollins.

This year I don't think there's any question that Rollins has been the better and more valuable player. Long term, there's no question Reyes is the guy you'd want.

Wow, Reyes has Rollins by just 21 points in OBP, but Jimmy has him by a whopping 97 points in SLG. Mostly what Reyes has done this year is steal, and while he has a high number of steals, he's not really that efficient at it (around 78% success rate.) Rollins has 40 less steals, but an 86% success rate so he hurts his team less often with his stealing.

I'd rather have Reyes' success rate along with his steals frequency than Rollins' numbers, but not at the expense of everything else that Jimmy has done so well this year.

What happened to Reyes' power? His SLG is down 50+ points this year.

Not me, I'd rather not have a guy get caught stealing 21 times just cause ol' Rickey thinks he can get 100 steals.

I would tend to agree with this--the evidence can be found in how often Rollins scores. Someone with a bigger calculator than mine could figure out how often Rollins scores when reaches base with a single or a walk.

*Thread Hijack Warning*

I don't know why it bothers me so much, but the grammatical error in the thread title is driving me nuts.

(Sorry about the temporary thread hijack. Please resume praising Jimmy's season again.)

An historic season doesn't sound "right"

Is it actually right? I always thought it was "a historic season" as well.

Both usages are acceptable in modern English.

that link seems to appear to say that "a" is correct, but since so many people use it incorrectly, it is now correct.

I read it to say that along with many other exceptions to the general rules of the English language, this is one of the many where there are two ways to do something and neither is wrong.

I just don't like how you have to say it. An historic doesn't really roll off the tongue.

It's a matter of personal preference, obviously. I happen to be in the camp that feels "an historic" sounds better than "a historic." Neither is wrong. They're just different.

not sure how relevant that is...says more about the hitters behind him than him

It surely doesn't hurt him that he's got a great lineup behind him, but he definitely finds himself in scoring position with great regularity, often without the help of his lineup.
