Sometimes my humor is so subtle that only I am amused.

Or often, rather. Often I am the only one amused.

I will say in your defense, you often make me smile quietly to myself.

Never thought about it before, but you could go the other way and be annoyed that the word is "nonsensical" and not "nonsensible."

I do not think this belongs here, specifically, but it doesn't merit it's own breakout thread, nor do I want it to wallow away in the random thoughts thread.

Are there words that you look up every time you use it? For me, the impetus of this question is the word impetus. I believe the main hangup is due to similarities with the word impediment which is an antonym.

I just learned recently that a person who operates restaurants is called a restaurateur, not a restauranteur.

After seeing the term "ink pen" in print for the first time I remember, I looked into it and found that there are not only seemingly intelligent people who are not annoyed by it, but also wonder why others are annoyed by it. So I'll try to let it slide next time I run across it. But I'll probably fail since it seems so ridiculously redundant, unless you happen to be writing a missive from inside an animal enclosure and want to avoid confusion.

Fan base is a silly expression. The word base is not needed. Teams have fans. The fans aren't in a base. But tons of folks use it. So I guess that make it acceptable. But it is not a good thing.

A decent summary of misused phrases.

I admit I haven't come across "fall by the waste side" or "nip it in the butt," but I might have to throw them in my own conversation from time to time.
