Thanks, Prattrules!

So, if you guys were going to try to sell a car, where would you try to sell it? I've heard of using Craigslist, but that seems a little sketchy. I need to sell both our old cars over the next month, so I need to get on this. My wife's car is in good condition (Saturn, well maintained). My old car is in bad condition (Saturn, couple of dings from someone hitting me in a parking lot and not as well maintained).

Any suggestions? I would take like $800 for mine, but we'd like to get more for hers. We'll need to buy a vehicle in Switzerland, so we need the cash.

You could always consider taking a small ad out in the local paper. Would probably cost 25 bucks or something. I'd probably put it on Craigslist too. I'm sure there are other websites you can put it on if you do a google search.

plus most papers put their ads on their website as well, I used the inquirer a few years ago to sell my old Impreza and sold it in a day and still got calls on it for over a week after even though they removed the ad

a cheap car like that will sell quick, many people are looking for "beaters" and cars they can use while having not much money

I've read too that the cash for clunkers took a lot of cheap cars out of the market.

Also, a cheap car is likely to be bought with cash, which makes the whole transaction a lot easier. And people buying a car for $800 won't ask questions about various stains and such in the back seat or trunk.

Thanks guys. sounds like there's some hope I'll find a way to get rid of them. I'll post them tonight

Went the Craigslist route and sold them both within 36 hours. I spent 6 hours today standing out in the parking lot like a used car salesman and running back and forth to the front gate to let people in. It's was disgustingly hot and humid. No breeze, as usual. The guy buying the one car actually got lightheaded and had to sit down. Anyway, I got about $450 more for them than my goal, so I'm happy.

I'm about to start shopping for a new car. Anybody have any ideas?
I rented a chevy malibu two years ago that I really liked, or there's that toyota small suv, maybe the rav 4, I'm not sure. My mom had one that was pretty sharp. And I probably can't afford a volvo, right?

I'm trying to keep my monthly payments in the 300's, so I guess I'm trying to stay around 20K, but I really don't know much more than that. I've never had a car payment, so what's reasonable?

That's a pretty wide range between Malibu and RAV 4.

yeah I know, I'm just starting to look into this, so I haven't really narrowed it down yet. I've got a 99 GMC sonoma which has been great for me, but it's uncomfortable for long trips and it's about to start costing me money to maintain. Every time I take a long trip I want to rent a car for it, which is just starting to get silly.

any clue what car insurance is going to be? gotta factor that in.

i'll usually set a budget for the car per month(insurance, payment, maintenance) and try to stick to that.

i'd stay away from chevy personally.

i like this car

What kind of car is that?

And if you don't mind me asking, what do you keep your car budget at? I know a lot of people who make less than me and handle significant car payments. I'll just have to pay attention to my spending for once

Chevy is better than it was, and Toyota has had some problems recently. As far as I know, Hondas are still quite good, and I've had two Mazdas and liked them very much. My Malibu is closing in on 80k and 6 years old. While it's had no major problems, there gas gauge doesn't work anymore, and that's an annoyance. Used is supposed to be a better deal than new, but there's probably more risk involved.

But what are looking to do with your car--simply get from point a to point b? Impress women? Haul shit?
