* The Seinfeld thread *

Seinfeld belongs in anyone's list of top sitcoms. It has aged better than I expected. (Whereas All in the Family doesn't really age all that well).

Still, my favorite sitcom is Taxi. I don't know if there's ever been such a talented cast on a sitcom. Seinfeld's cast was also pretty talented.

Larry David is a comedic genius and the show was casted p erfectly.

The only replaceable cast member was Jerry Seinfeld.

I think he was maybe the most intergral part. There are ways to look good and one way is to be contrasted to someone who ain't so good. Seinfeld is a good assist man. He'd set up the pins and let the other 3 knock them down.

I think it was the Kramer's Intern/HELLLOOOO! episode that prompted a friend of mine to observe, "It's frightening how much better this show is than anything else on TV."

And I agree they hold up well, 15 years after many of the classic episodes. That said, I can't imagine ever getting the DVDs because the re-runs are constantly on.

I'm not just saying this to be an ass, but I don't really understand how anyone can say the show is overrated. Hell, for the first four seasons it was massively underrated by the media. The show was really about the writing, not the actual acting, but outside of Jerry, they were all good actors, and he was just a standup comedian trying to act. The show pushed the envelope in terms of what you could say/do on tv in prime time, and the production/technical aspects of the show were cutting edge at the time.

There are a signficant number that aren't on and many are pared down for syndicated television. Check out DVDTalk.com review of the box set.

Not to speak for anyone else, but I call it overrated because I never really liked it much. The George Costanza character (or maybe Jason Alexander) in particular was obnoxious to the point of making me dislike the show.

I love Seinfeld as well, but I enjoy the early episodes more than the later ones. I think it reached its peak just before George went to work for the Yankees. Is there nothing as good as Seinfeld on TV today? What about Curb Your Enthusiasm. I think that show is just as "about nothing" as Seinfeld was. Or maybe its so funny because the absence of as laugh track makes it seem more "real".

I agree that the show has aged very well. You could randomly watch an episode now and aside from some of the clothing/hairstyles, it could take place right now, 15 years later.

Also, the show did push the envelope a lot, remember being the master of their own domain? They never once said what the bet was, but the entire audience knew exactly what they were talking about. That's brilliant writing.

Its still one of my favorite all time shows.

Along the same lines, the episode in the 6th season talking about abortion, and using the parallel of making your own pizza, and how it's "not a pizza till it comes out of the oven"....I thought that was brilliant.

The outakes from that episode - I think from the clip show before the last epiosde - are hilarious.

George: Helping people... Of course. Of course! It makes perfect sense! How could I not be doing this!? I am gonna help somebody, Dammit!

Elaine: [To Jerry] What about you?

Jerry: Nah, it's not for me.

Elaine: Jerry, if anybody should be doing this, it's you.

George: What kind of a person are you?

Jerry: I think I'm pretty much like you-- only successful.

I would put Arrested Development's 3 seasons up against the best 3 Seinfeld seasons and say that AD wins.

No way, both are brilliant but AD appeals to your higher tastes, plus there's still stuff that you find in repeated watchings that you dont catch the first viewing, Seinfeld isnt that complex

Gotta disagree there.

Seasons 3-4-5 of Seinfeld matches the 3 best years of any tv show ever produced.

I love Seinfeld and it is probably my second favorite show of all time. But AD takes it overall. Really they are hard to compare though, while I love AD more, part of Seinfeld was its ability to keep it going for so long.
