Often repeated anecdote told by Paul McCartney: He had written the song but hadn't completed the lyrics-some of the lines were just filled out with "nonsense" words put there to fill out the needs of meter and rhyme. this line was one of them, but when Lennon heard it he told McCartney that he should definitely leave it in , that it was one of the best in in the song. (Of course, things were pretty tense between them at the time, so maybe it was a big joke by Lennon, who would LOL every time he heard the song).

It does make a sort of sense, though, if what you need is nearby but just out of sight or out of mind.
