Overall, my antics during aside, I thought Kamala won on key issues, COVID, healthcare, and police brutality. She affirmed more than 2x the fact that Joe isn’t raising taxes on the middle class and won’t ban fracking (hear dat western PA) and was effective although restrained in gutting pence on covid. Pence was good at picking on her with really only packing of the courts, which fundamentally isn’t a widely unpopular or frankly even well understood issue.

Thought Kamala did well pivoting a few times to dig on trump - with transparency on health to transparency on taxes as a good example as well as the military,

I've enjoyed Pence taking an extra 20 seconds for every question. Instead of talking over his opponent like Trump, he's taken the approach of talking over the moderator.

I didn't see the primary debates much so this was pretty much my first sustained look at her. She came off much warmer than I thought she'd be. Maybe the top cop thing had my expectations off. I need some implicit bias training.

I wondered this. She definitely wasn't getting baited into an argument. And she went out of the way to respect the moderator, who Pence completely ignored.

Wonder what the time breakdown for the debate is. He clearly got to speak more than she did, unless I missed Susan giving her an extra 2 minute answer or something.

Pence had a similar strategy to Trump but just centered on interrupting the moderator instead of his opponent, though he did a little of that too. And Trump surrogates on tv over the last few weeks have also approached everything by yelling and talking over people. It's not a coincidence and it is effective at getting more time to express your views, especially if the talker can take advantage of a weak host or moderator. And it's a behavior that authoritarian-leaning people really respond to.
