It is a bummer that online Sanders supporters cannot see how electing Joe Biden will be helpful to the progressive cause. There are voices in congress that will advocate for all of the things Sanders has been, Sanders being one of those voices. We will actually get to talk about the issues too. People in Biden's team may very well push for those things too.

Most of them will get there. Very few people were both excited about Hillary and aware of the possibility of Trump actually winning.

I'm gonna head home for lunch so I can watch him drop out* on TV.

* I'll actually be kinda stunned if that is really what the press conference is about.

Great thread that speaks to leftists who are unhappy about Biden. "Do you think that a candidate who loses the primary could win the general?"

Bernie starts off sounding like he might drop out, but all the reports are he is staying in through the debate.

He's staying in, officially. He is laying out what he will ask Biden during the debate. I do not know if this is to try and shift Joe's answers to something more palatable. He does sound like he knows he cannot win, much different tune than 2016. I would expect Bernie Sanders to drop out on Tuesday night barring a miracle.

Does anyone really buy the generational argument? Will this be the first generation to not lose it's liberalism as it ages?

They will lose it to an extent, but party identification can be pretty sticky. Keep in mind, on many issues, the Republican Party is simply out of step with most Americans, not to mention younger voters. And it has moved more sharply to the right than the Dems have moved to the left.

The other thing is the idea that the Republicans stand for responsible governance is a pretty tough case to make to a generation that has seen Republican mismanagement in pretty much every catastrophe of this century--Iraq/Afghanistan, Katrina, mortgage crisis, and now Trump.

I wrote that poorly. I don't mean switch from Dem to Rep. More that the extreme liberalism of youth fades to a more moderate view. I acknowledge it partly includes societal changes.

I think it does, but I do think you get more pragmatic. For example, if Medicare for All can't be implemented in its purest version, as voters get older they will become more willing to make compromises to get closer to the goal of universal health coverage.

I’m in my early 30’s and I’m much more liberal than I was in my 20’s.

I was about to make a similar point. I thought one's ideology was more a product of their time rather than age? Like Gimpy, I'm sliding to the left year by year.

I think there is a broader general societal shift left that is unstoppable. Even though it doesn't feel like it sometimes, the middle (median?) continues to move left and become more progressive. Which is wonderful.

But there is no doubt that younger voters on the progressive left will shift towards the center as they have children of their own. The moment you become responsible for someone other than your self, the general abstractions that form the basis of your point of view become secondary, if not meaningless. For most people, everything gets viewed through the spectrum of those children, and protecting those whom you are responsible for. When things become that specific and individualized, your views become more pragmatic, because the only question you care about is "How do I keep this person(s) healthy, safe, thriving, and with limitless opportunities?" Your (my) mindset becomes: how do I protect what I have to put my children in the best position to lead happy, fulfilling lives?

That's one person's view at least. I do want to help people (and try my best) and I certainly don't want to hurt anyone, but the rest of the world isn't worth 1% of what my children are worth to me and I will make my decisions accordingly.
I know what you're asking yourself and the answer is yes. I have a nick name for my penis. Its called the Octagon, but I also nick named my testes - my left one is James Westfall and my right one is Doctor Kenneth Noisewater.
