my god, i forgot how bad the initial Star Trek movie was

it has about 40 minutes of padding, Kirk's an ahole, the new characters are utterly pointless, and the effects are amazingly bad, even for 1979

yeh, the trip into Vger's cloud was just a bunch of time watching bad special effects go by. I thought the premise was ok, but the story just didn't live up to it.
