Probably someone had a diabetic pet that died recently.

It's probably a little closer to turkey.

For riders with good head, neck and trunk control. in other words... not intended to transport dead bodies to their final destination during inclement winter weather.

so what's the buzz in the US about this new coronavirus? The chinese are taking it VERY seriously. It appears to have originated in a Wuhan seafood market, making the jump from bats to snakes to humans (not confirmed yet, but that's the theory). They have temperature checkpoints and you can't get on a plane with a temperature. During the SARS outbreak, these checkpoints were even set up outside cities, limiting travel in and out of the cities and even rural areas.

I find this stuff pretty fascinating. These markets have tons of different animals in close contact and a simple mutation in one of the viruses can cause a jump from animal to animal or animal to humans. It doesn't help that the hygiene in the markets is often bad. Even the local supermarkets have very poor cleanliness. We used to go to one market when it first opened because the produce was good and cheap and we could get decent cuts of meat there. But now I have trouble even going to the market because the smell of rotting meat and fish is so strong. We still get some produce and processed food there, but now we get meat at the new Sam's club.

Anyway, I'm just wondering if it's on your radar yet. It's already made it's way out of China, so it will probably spread. I've heard we won't be allowed back into my school compound if we have a temperature. In other words, I won't be able to go home if I have a temperature, since that is where I live. I imagine I'll have to go to a clinic until it's confirmed I don't have the virus.

@Monkeyboy - there are some exchange students from the Chinese provenance a in MD and they have been denied visiting the school based on concerns... So they will be visiting US cultural sites around DC. They were screened in NY for the virus, but parents.

So other then that bit I think it's been super undersold as a potential global threat. There has been reporting that there are far more deaths then have been attributed by the government, and other reports about the Chinese efforts to contain the out break by locking down the region.

Overall I feel like most of the US is pretty clueless about it in general.

Something hokey about that. The same black man discriminated against twice? C'mon! It's not like non-whites are discriminated against every day. Oh, wait...

Been subscribing to Philly.com with Sunday delivery for years now, but the site and the news has gone so far down hill, that I'm done with it.

I'm looking to relocate my news dollars to a something else. Anyone have any recommendations?

Yeah, every article is written by Rob Torrone, I can't login to the site on my work computer at all, it takes my username and password and says I'm logged in, but then tells me I'm at my article limit. I contacted their support about it and they emailed me back some generic email thanks for the feedback and being a valued customer. I'm done with them.

The sports section is effing terrible too. Like wow I can't wait to read this article about how the Phillies are dumbasses for not signing Realmuto right this second by Bob Brookver. Oh, let me move over to Keith Pompey who can't put a coherent thought together. Flyers news? I'm sure Sam Carchidi has something interesting to say. It's garbage, particularly when you're signed up to the Athletic like I am. I think there are some talented writers there in other areas, but it's getting bad.

NPR for news... hands down. as far as local tho, you have to bite the bullet. 95% of the inky is trash, got to find that 5%. those local tv news sites don't provide depth, but they do tell you what's going on.

Local news coverage everywhere is pretty near terrible or non-existent. There seems to be no workable economic model for good local or even statewide news coverage.

But at least some of the blame lies with the horrific cluttered design that many websites have. Did no one learn from google that the simpler you design is, the more people like it?

4 or 5 cities in China have been pretty much shut down. These are major cities. There are people concerned about food shortages because shelves are starting to empty. It's chinese new year and most of the population visits family or leaves the country for vacation, but people from those cities are stuck there. They don't fuck around. Last I heard was around 100 dead, but I'm sure that's low because of the reporting problem. The good news is that it seems much less lethal than SARS or MERS. I heard the WHO was going to address it soon. It'll be interesting to see what they do.

Update, it's now 11 cities and over 35 million people. Public transport has been shut down in that region and most chinese new year's activities have been called off. The WHO has weighed in, calling it an emergency in China, but that it currently falls short of a global medical emergency.

It's interesting to see what an authoritarian govt can do in a situation like this. They are in lockdown mode, which may help contain the outbreak, but is fraught with ethical issues. Many people who are sick are being turned away from hospitals, so it's really hard to say how many have the virus. All the travel outside of the afflicted area for chinese new year is still bound to spread the disease, but I imagine much less than what would happen without the restrictions in Wuhan and the neighboring areas.I see many chinese here in Thailand right now. I wonder how many came before the lockdown and how many may be carriers.

Pompey is the one that just cuts and pastes entire paragraphs from article to article right? I'm remembering someone finding multiple Sixers articles with identical text.
