Depends who you bought it from. Anywhere between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Should the toilet lid always be down when not in use? My roommate and I have different ideologies about a lot of things, but he may be right about this.

Absolutely not. Extremely inefficient. In fact, in a residence with a majority of men the seat should also normally be up.

I close the lid every time I use it. It was the only way I could train myself to put the seat down

actually there is a very practical hygienic reason for it to be down. not between uses, but when it is flushed. so if you're gonna close it when you flush, doesn't make much sense to open it again until its next use.

Putting aside the toilet plume, you can figure out mathematically if makes sense to put it up or down based on the gender ratio of the household and how often you go #1 versus #2. In my house, it makes sense to put it down because it's 3 females and just me, plus the youngest female is 3 and not good on the toilet yet.
