This is totally unrelated to all of this fun impeachment stuff, but it occurred to me today that only the American right could conceive of itself as and pat itself on the back for being "populist," while simultaneously denigrating democracy, actively working to disenfranchise voters, and supporting institutions which privilege the votes and voices of certain (white, rural) people over others.

Well it depends what you mean by “populist.” If you mean “very popular with the angry white voters they are deliberately pandering to,” then yes, they are populists. Ask your average white Republican if they would support:

1) Re-instituting a poll tax or test;
2) Disenfranchising people of color or people who do not speak English or who have a “Mexican” last name by whatever means can be devised;
3) Permitting federal funds to be used for school voucher systems so white people can send their white kids to white Christian schools, but disallowing federal grants to things like Planned Parenthood or the NAACP, both of which serve (in one case, by mission) minority communities and lean left in their policies;

Why then, yes, you’ll find a lot of support! Populism to be sure!
