but yeah if i see straight lanes green and right turn lane red, i treat it as a red light that i am allowed to turn red on unless it specifically says no turn on red.

Mmmm yeah what I'm saying here is this person is in the left lane, red light. Two lanes next to them are green. Opposing traffic (AKA me), has a green light and turning right, and these people are trying to turn left at the same time as all of these cars coming through and turning right.


Yeah, that's how I read it. Not even sure what these guys are talking about it. I don't even recall a right turn signal, unless it's accompanied by a no turn on red sign. Why else would you add the signal?

to protect pedestrians, also to allow cars to continue right while the perpendicular traffic has a green left turn arrow but the through lanes still have a red

this is the only real reason i can think of for these lights. it allows more flow of traffic at safe times.

Doesn't a regular red do this too? Unless there is a specific 'no turn on red' that red arrow ain't no different than a red circle imo.

A STEADY RED ARROW means you must stop and may not turn in the direction the arrow points. Wait for a Green Arrow or a Flashing Yellow Arrow before you start. The same turns-on-red that are allowed for a steady red signal are allowed for a steady red arrow.

Yeah, your examples are good ones, and now that you mention it I have encountered these lights. Just never enough to develop the same level of aggravation some people obviously have. I also grew up in a simpler time when there was no turn on red, so I don't really get too annoyed when people don't take advantage of it.
