According to Google, its acceptance rate is 17.7%, so it's pretty tough. I think they have spent a decent amount of money encouraging kids to apply so they could reject them, thus lowering its admissions rate and increasing its ranking in the US News and World Report. The 25/75 ACT is 30-33, which is solid, but not stratospheric.

Season 6 of Full House, there was an episode where Jesse and Becky lied on an application to get their twins into a particular school. You'd have thought Loughlin would've learned

Ha! I didn't read Calvin's link and really had no idea what you guys were talking about. I assumed it was a different Loughlin and BigEd just wanted to make a Full House joke. Felicity Huffman too. Jeez Louise.

Can you imagine the heartbreak that must be felt to be rich, white, and famous, only to spawn an average everyday kid who can't get into an elite school on their own? Thoughts and prayers.

I wonder why William H. Macy wasn't charged with anything. Sounds like he was in on it as well with Huffman. That slippery Frank Gallagher.

I haven't seen any track or cross country coaches caught up in this yet, and I'd be surprised if they are. Not because they're more moral, but because preferred spots to student athlete recruits is very limited, and it would have to be truly worthwhile to sabotage your program by wasting one on a student unlikely to contribute. Jerome Allen made out pretty well, but was it really worth it when he was forced to leave Penn after a few years becasue he wasn't winning enough, a fact that certainly was not helped by giving a spot to a guy who never saw the court.

I would guess this depends on how much the school cares about winning in the sport in question. USC clearly cares about winning in track, and Penn at least used to care about winning in basketball. But there's probably not a whole lot of pressure to win in most non-revenue sports programs. And even D-1 coaches in these sports have few if any scholarship athletes in their programs. If a coach isn't holding a scholarship over a student's head, there's really nothing he or she can do to require the athlete to perform. Successful coaches in these programs probably have ways to figure out how serious an athlete is about continuing at the college level, so it's not difficult to see how this could go on. And frankly, if there is pressure to win, a coach might figure that since their job is so insecure as it is, they might as well take whatever they can get while they can.

Didn't read the link, but are they also implicating foreign kids? I know for a fact that Saudi kids are buying their way into American schools by paying for buildings and whatnot. Boston University was taking everyone and they had a population of Saudi kids who didn't even know their times tables.

That’s legal bribery. This was not. Both are icky.

And pretty much every college uses full pay international students to generate revenue. To be sure, at non-selective institutions, they are often among the stronger students, though others might be among the most egregious violators of academic integrity. Heck, anecdotally at least, Rutgers takes out of state students for the same reason. And basically, the University of Arkansas is University of upper income kids from Texas who couldn't get into UT or Texas A&M.

(True story--caught an international student cheating. She did not handle it well, spending a big chunk of my time begging me to let it go. (I didn't.) Later, she was taking on on-line class, but paying someone to take the class for her. She got caught because the person taking the class demanded more more money or he would rat her out. She didn't pay, he ratted her out. She claimed that she shouldn't be expelled because she was being extorted. The argument didn't work.)

One could also say that not needing financial aid is a kind of bribery as well. And believe me, that's basically the main reason colleges offer binding early decision programs--it's clearly designed to fill the class with as many full pay students as possible.

The problem with the criminal activity is that the colleges don't get their cut.

This times ten, or eleven altogether.

Not sure I understand what the difference is. Is it because they pretended to be athletes?

I just found it gross that the worst students I've ever seen were going to a good school like Boston U.
