yowza, that wells fargo outage has caused my direct deposit paycheck to not be posted overnight as usual. Wasn't too many years ago that this could've been a devastating turn of events for me. I hope others don't get jammed up because of this.

According to the Reddit, there was a fire at a data center, and it's effing people everywhere. Just about everything is/was shut down.

I am super impressed at the Bank's in ability/unwillingness to invest in awfully standard disaster recovery with a failover to another data center in a different region. I mean that is super forward thinking and all that... except it isn't... Every cloud provider has regions, every data center provider offers failover, and even if this were a private data management strategy (it was not) there should be a hot swap to an out of region automagically. I previously worked for a mid-sized company that hosted client data in a private data center strategy and we had Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Nevada as redundant compute and storage to manage workload, and failover with private data lines between them cutting recovery to below a second even if it needed to resubmit a transaction.

Since there are repots from the local fire department that there was no fire, and that it was actually the fire suppression system that knocked it off line followed by the failover system... failing... I guess there are some easy consulting dollars on the table for all these knuckleheads. Minimally there is a DR test, and that minimum is to not shut down but disconnect the primary data center to see what happens as it is not horrific to recover from that since it is hot and all you did was drop the network connect. 0400 east coast time is a less harmful time to try this (sorry Hawaii, Alaska and international clients). Oh well.

yeah, hard to believe they didn't have an effective DR plan in place to minimize the effects of losing a single data center. heads are gonna roll. wouldn't be surprised if this is the final nail in the WF coffin. with the lack of regulatory oversight right now one of the big boys can acquire WF.
