Mitchell (the GOP prosecutor) keeps trying to find inconsistencies in inconsequential details, not sure the strategy works

File under no one is native to the more populous portions of Virginia and you have incumbent Tim Kane squaring off against Corey Stewart, both of whom were born Minnesotans.

Now all politics being local brings this review of last nights Kaine/Stewart debate:

1. The moderator was Chuck Todd, which works since he lives in Arlington, VA

2. Stewart was the expected hot mess

a. Said Kaine hates the military which ignores that the March budget Ominbus that he voted for, and some authorship of. Stewart is refering to the Janurary short term spending bill that Kaine did not vote for in order to work on something sustaining. Without missing the irony short bus, Stewart said March 26, 2018 "I wish the president had vetoed it." Kaine also has been a drivnig force behind the 355 ship Navy Fleet (good jobs in Hampton Rhoads).

b. Stewart said that Kaine never spent a dime on infrastructure while Governor, preferring to squirrel away $1B spitefully meant for roads. I am not sure who that is in spite of, but Kaine did initiate the Metro Silver Line to Dulles while Governor, and expanded NVA HOT lanes (that I am no fan of). Apparently the train and HOT lanes were visible from the building that the debate was in. Stewart retorted with $40 tolls! (happened once, and yes it woke up people to a flaw in the system)

3. Respect for women came up. Stewart was pinning the ideas that ERA would mean mothers would be drafted, and that the Senate is full of sexual predators that Kaine lets get off without penalty. He also tried to insinuate that because not all of the names of those who paid out to accusers are known that Kaine is on that list because... who knows. I really though America's dad was going to swear at him, but brushed it off with a denial.

Stewart said that he mixes it up and that is how he gets things done. Plied that Kaine would not work with Trump because he was Hill's VP candidate, but that he would respect the president. He stayed away from his big controversies around things like "our" monuments and heritage (see Minnesota above).

Kaine stated bluntly that Stewart's own Prince William county board was not supporting him with the GOP members siding with and supporting Kaine with one exception, a member who is abstaining from endorsing. Stewart said that situation is because they want the status quo.

At the end, and true to Trump style, Stewart just chocked out a bunch of attack lines that he said a few times earlier in the debate, often like Donald interrupting his opponents answers with suppositions and unproven theories.

I am looking forward to hunting down some fact checking.

Did Grassley say that the Democrats could NOT have copies of that stupid map?

Poor Kamala Harris had to clarify that "we just want to see what she's looking at." What the fuck did he think the Dems wanted to do with the map?

Yeah, beside all the gory details of the assault, I think one of the biggest takeaways from today should be that the big, bad male Republicans on the committee sent a woman to do their dirty work. More than a bit ironic, I think.

Heidi Pryzbyla, the smartest person on Morning Joe (not hard to do, IMO), just tweeted that a GOP source just texted her, "There's no way we can go forward with this nomination hearing this account. This is brutal."

I wouldn’t underestimate Grassley and McConnell. If they knew any way to get anyone else through before the mid-terms they’d do it, but they’re stuck with Kavanaugh which is, by the way, they’re so pissed at the 11th-hour nature of the accusations being made public.

Why the obsession with getting it done by the midterms?

1. Politizing an open Supreme Court seat to drive voters to the polls in 2016 worked very well for them. Why wouldn't it in 2018?

2. Even in the unlikely scenario where they lose control of the Senate they can still confirm their pick during the lame duck session.

Have to assume that any 'delays' on her part were for hours and hours of preparation. And it shows.

I think an underrated outcome is that he gets out of committee and then doesn't pass a full vote. I just don't see how at least two republican senators don't vote no after this.

The point to have the counsel is to avoid GOP Senators from seeming out of touch, petty, or misogynistic. Graham found a way around it.

How quickly does McConnell smash the button to vote? Tomorrow I assume. There is no reason to think that he will be sympathetic at all.
