“He is not resigning. He is going to retire,” Conyers’ great-nephew Ian Conyers, a Michigan state senator, told the Times, adding that he planned to run for the seat in Congress himself.

But Conyer’s lawyer, Arnold Reed, wrote on Twitter: “I have not spoken to Ian Conyers and no one is aware of the congressman’s plans except he and I and his wife.”

I doubt it. There's supposed to be a statement from today on some Michigan radio show.

The more the rural U.S. struggles, company officials said, the more places Dollar General has found to prosper. “The economy is continuing to create more of our core customer,” Chief Executive Todd Vasos said in an interview at the company’s Goodlettsville, Tenn., headquarters.

“We are putting stores today [in areas] that perhaps five years ago were just on the cusp of probably not being our demographic,” he said, “and it has now turned to being our demographic.”

Maybe DJT can be CiC of Dollar General.

"my legacy will continue and cannot be diminished"
"this too shall pass"

Snippets of Conyers during his radio interview going on right now. No real "announcement" yet.

Conyers endorsed his son to replace him, so I'm assuming it's a retirement effective end of term, not immediately.

I stopped listening to the radio show, so of course after bloviating, Conyers announces he is retiring immediately

Team Roy Moore really are the most disgusting people currently chewing through the news cycle. Their defenses are offensive positions. Vile.

I love that Conyers endorsed his son then announced his retirement. Nepotism is what our country loves about politics

There's no doubt that DG is putting stores in places where they didn't exist five years ago--my struggling rural county has seen at least three new ones in the last couple of years.

But at least two of these areas really didn't have any store at all five years ago, and the other is a slightly larger town that now has two stores. I would guess that while the people who use the DG in these places are low-middle income, their motivation for using DG isn't because they can't afford to shop at Wal-Mart anymore, but because they can get a gallon of milk or a box of cereal at a low price without a 45 minute round trip.

Now, there are probably other places in rural America where DG really is building because people can't afford Kroger or Wal-Mart anymore. (And the big difference isn't that DG has lower prices, but rather that you can buy in smaller quantity, thus if you're strapped for cash, you can get a small box of cereal at DG while Wal-Mart only has the larger sizes.)

Anyway, my point is that at least in part, DG's growth comes from putting stores in areas that didn't have anything before--it's function is more like a convenience store than a cheap store.

Doll Is Mine wrote:Goldman #$!&@ Sachs is like "the tax bill won't be a big boost to the economy".

Q: What does this mean for growth?
A: We expect the legislation to boost growth by around 0.3pp in 2018 and 2019.

This is based mainly on the Senate version of the bill, which delays the corporate income tax cut to 2019 but includes a tax cut for individuals (including pass-through income) of around 0.6% of GDP in 2018, slightly greater than what we had previously penciled in. The effect is spread over two years in part because some of the provisions that reduce individual income taxes would show up primarily as lower tax settlements in 2019 rather than reduced withholding from paychecks in 2018.

On the corporate side, we disregard the temporary increase in tax payments in 2018 related to the tax on deemed repatriation; we do not estimate a growth effect from those repatriated profits, either. While the corporate tax cut looks likely to take effect with a one year delay, in 2019, we note that there is likely to be some pull-forward of capex from 2019 into 2018, as companies attempt to maximize their deductions against the higher corporate rate.

We note that the effect in 2020 and beyond looks minimal and could actually be slightly negative (bolding mine), as the JCT estimates suggest that the tax cut that year would actually be slightly smaller than in 2019.

KSA (or a spokesman/something for the kingdom) has already said that it will derail peace talks from their perspective.
