Economists and tax experts are overwhelmingly skeptical that the bills in the House and Senate can generate meaningful job growth and economic expansion. Many view the legislation not as a product of genuine deliberation, but as a transfer of wealth to corporations and affluent individuals — both generous purveyors of campaign contributions. By 2027, people making $40,000 to $50,000 would pay a combined $5.3 billion more in taxes, while the group earning $1 million or more would get a $5.8 billion cut, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation and the Congressional Budget Office.

“When you put all these pieces together, what you’re left with is we are squandering a giant sum of money,” said Edward D. Kleinbard, a former chief of staff at the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation who teaches law at the University of Southern California. “It’s not aimed at growth. It is not aimed at the middle class. It is at every turn carefully engineered to deliver a kiss to the donor class.”

This is from today’s NYT. Our Congress is about to pass legislation that’s going to widen inequality and change the quality of life for the worse for almost all Americans except the uber wealthy. It’s a fundamental change that will negatively impact American society for decades, whether you’re a homeowner, a would-be homeowner, a student, a parent trying to afford college for your children, poor or middle class or just about anyone who is not in the 1%. Moreover it will only further strengthen the political power of the most wealthy at the expense of all other Americans.

I’m at the point and station in my life where I’m going to be fine the rest of my life. I’m most concerned about the younger generations, including my friends here on this board. Your financial prospects and those of your children are about to be seriously and significantly weakened for the rest of your lives. Outside of some cataclysmic event like a North Korean nuclear strike or the continued acceleration of climate change, there’s likely nothing which will adversely affect so many of your financial and political lives on a daily basis more pervasively than this legislation.

Over the last 30 years the Republicans have moved methodically to do everything within their power to transfer wealth and power from lower and middle income citizens to the super wealthy. What they are about to do in Congress right now will not only double down on those efforts but will do so in such an accelerated manner than the last couple of decades will look like the good old days of equality and prosperity for all in retrospect.

This is an inflection point. History may well regard it as the time when the American dream, already on life support, was smothered once and for all.

This one I have no clue about .

the first part: it's just an updated version of the editorial. i'm confused why so many see it as bad. if that's the case, editorials in general should all end.

to the second: the times doesn't want reporters to color their tweets or fb w their personal opinions. I guess he considers it that. also, he's watching fox and friends to start the day. it's daily briefing time!

Focus on the positive, which is that none of this is permanent. If the Dems take back the WH, Senate, and House in '20 they can pass progressive tax reform.

I broken down and wrote to my US Rep. I asked her that when the time comes for reconciling the tax plan to seek an economically equitable plan that recognizes that those of us with means can, and should, pay more taxes for world leading schools, safe roads, and national security. That a fair tax plan should be the agenda item, and the tax cut for the wealthy should not be offset by recent college grads, retirees, and the statistical middle class in her district. I pointed out the the CBO is regularly lambasted by congress with what-ifs and intangibles unmoored from facts, or are at best supremely hopeful, in favor of the JCT because that group seems somewhat over matched and when they do produce it is often too late. So this rare opportunity to assess a draft bill and arrive at effectively the same conclusion demonstrates that this bill is not good for the citizen to the US.

Of course I was more professional, but I expect that the result will be the same, a polite form letter thank you followed with no action.

I'd like to take a moment to thank Paul Ryan, and Mitch McConnell for their leadership during these trying time. I am so proud of them stepping forward to address the concerns generate by the president and his twitter account over the last few days and show true leadership in speaking truth to power about the unacceptable nature forwarding imaginary agendas, conspiracy theories, hate, and, in general, unamerican values. Wait, what? No one has heard from either on any of this? Sorry, back to what you were doing.

Well, it gets him out of the Senate. Yes, he'll be replaced with another Republican but there's really no one in AR who would have the same kind of evil influence that Cotton has had. Tim Griffin is a pretty scummy guy, but he's also a total lightweight.

I have no idea why Tom Cotton would give up a safe seat he can probably hold for the next 40 years for a few years as CIA chief.

The first half of this was reported a few threads ago, but the Cotton rumor is a new twist (there were no reports of a replacement). Where a Tillerson ouster seems unbelievable, he has not been very supportive of Ivankna lately, so that is unforgivable.
