Tim Kaine in NPR said that these Manafort charges came today because he thinks that there were statute of limitations that would have been an issue

Federal tax enforcement actions must usually be brought within 10 years of the filing of the return to which they related. A 2006 return on extension would have been filed in October 2007. Maybe that's it. I haven't read the complaint yet.

I'd think Putin would actively encourage Manafort to zap drumpf - Putin has no real use for drumpf himself, it's all about destabilizing the US, & nothing better for that than the international spectacle of a deranged unqualified "president" screaming his innocence whilst being led away in legirons and/or a straitjacket

Manafort and Gates both plead not guilty. They were not held on bail but house arrest arrangements are being worked out.
