Dear Mr. President
Congratulations on a remarkable run. Millions have placed their hopes in you, and all of us, regardless of party, should hope for expanded prosperity and security during your tenure.
This is a unique office, without a clear blueprint for success, so I don’t know that any advice from me will be particularly helpful. Still, let me offer a few reflections from the past 8 years.
First, we’ve both been blessed, in different ways, with great good fortune. Not everyone is so lucky. It’s up to us to do everything we can (to) build more ladders of success for every child and family that’s willing to work hard.
Second, American leadership in this world really is indispensable. It’s up to us, through action and example, to sustain the international order that’s expanded steadily since the end of the Cold War, and upon which our own wealth and safety depend.
Third, we are just temporary occupants of this office. That makes us guardians of those democratic institutions and traditions — like rule of law, separation of powers, equal protection and civil liberties — that our forebears fought and bled for. Regardless of the push and pull of daily politics, it’s up to us to leave those instruments of our democracy at least as strong as we found them.
And finally, take time, in the rush of events and responsibilities, for friends and family. They’ll get you through the inevitable rough patches.
Michelle and I wish you and Melania the very best as you embark on this great adventure, and know that we stand ready to help in any ways which we can.

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — Nigeria-based Boko Haram extremists have killed more than 380 people in the Lake Chad region since April, a major resurgence of attacks that has doubled the casualties compared to the previous five months, Amnesty International said Tuesday.
The spike in attacks by the Islamic extremists is a result of increased use of suicide bombers, often women and girls, who carry out the attacks in highly populated areas in Cameroon's Far North region and Nigeria's Borno and Adamawa states, the rights group said. Cameroon has experienced at least one suicide attack per week, it said.

A German politician says that her party was the target of cyberattacks from Russia in the lead up to the country’s election.
Julia Klöckner, who along with Chancellor Angela Merkel is part of the Christian Democratic Union, says the group’s website was hit with 3,000 attacks on Sunday, many from Russian IP addresses.
It was not immediately clear who was behind the hacking attempts, or how successful they were.
Germany's intelligence chief said in July that he expected an influence campaign from Moscow ahead of the September 24 election.
The reported hack attempts on Sunday came right before Merkel debated the head of her party’s main rival, the Social Democrats.
Merkel is expected to win a fourth term as chancellor in the election, with a recent opinion poll showing her party with 38% and the SPD with 24%.

It is my grandest hope that Congress does its job, which is to understand that the President is not the Chief Executive of their business, and that his deranged words/agendas do not square with of representing the interests of the United States. I am hopeful of some type of revolt against the White House's randomness in the form of standing with the people, and sanity.
According to the two administration officials, here’s the policy to be announced later today:
The administration won't consider new applications for legal status dated after Sept. 5.
If you are not already protected by the program, you are out of luck, although applications filed before Tuesday that are pending will continue to be processed.
Anyone who has a DACA permit expiring between now and March 5, 2018, can apply for a two-year renewal. That application must be submitted by Oct. 5.
Some Dreamers, those with permits that expire between now and March 5, will be eligible for legal status for another two-plus years. For others, legal status ends as early as March 6.
But officials insist that even if Congress fails to enact new protection for the Dreamers, they will not be rounded up and deported. Officials say the priority for deportation will continue to be undocumented immigrants who have committed crimes.
"We love the Dreamers," said Trump from the Oval Office on Friday. "We love everybody."
The administration chose Sept. 5 to make its announcement on DACA, the same day Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and nine other attorneys general had said they planned on expanding a lawsuit to include a challenge to the DACA program if it’s not ended.
