LePage also noted he didn’t find out about the violence until Tuesday because he doesn’t watch TV or read newspapers.

one of the pieces of information I've learned from the last 6 days is since most don't read books, the main way most conservatives learn about history is through statues.

The trouble with Nazis is that when they step into the light, they are so repellant they get chased back into the roach motel.

The idea for right wing talk radio, blogs, Fox News, etc has been to profit from baseline fears of demographic change, globalization etc.

And that has greatly benefitted their preferred political party, the GOP, which relies for votes almost entirely on white Americans.

But right wing media has been smart about avoiding explicit white nationalism. Because fundamentally, people HATE being called racist.

And frankly, even a lot of far right media figures see those people as kooks. That's why they've redoubted to Reddit, Youtube, 4Chan etc.

Breitbart changed the calculus by inviting them in more openly. By embracing the so-called "alt right," they opened to door to the kooks.

It's of a piece with what Ron Paul did in the 90s and early 2000s, and what Pat Buchanan did. And it's dumb just from a business POV.

And now that Bretbart is fully in the White House (via both Bannon and crew and now clearly, Trump,) the GOP owns the nutters.

If they want them gone, they're gonna need to push them out. Not subtly. Forcefully. Let's see what they do.
