today's populism:

3:15 p.m.: Trump signs H.J. Res. 38 into law, nullifying a Department of the Interior rule aimed at protecting streams.

Trump to name R. Alexander Acosta to be new Labor Sec. seems like an odd hire (re: actually qualified) for Trump, just a quick hit from his Wikipedia:

1. Clerked for Justice Alito while he was on the Third Circuit
2. Worked in a DC law firm that specialized in employment and labor issues
3. Taught employment law, disability-based discrimination law, and civil rights law at George Mason
4. Member of the NLRB
5. Assistant AG for Civil Rights Division and as Principal Deputy Assistant AG for same division

Brantt wrote:Trump fired Flynn because Flynn made Pence look horrible. He didn't fire him for anything he did other than lying to Pence.

Maybe, but it doesn't fit snugly with all the facts, does it?

When the DOJ told Trump on January 26 that it had transcripts of Flynn's calls with the Russian ambassador, Trump knew at that time (if not before) that Flynn had lied to Pence. If Trump fired Flynn only because he "made Pence look horrible," why didn't he fire him then? Let me propose an alternative scenario which better fits the facts as we know them.

Let's suppose that Trump has brought only a small number of advisers into his confidence when dealing with Russia. Let's say that small group includes Flynn but not Pence. Keeping the facts from Pence would also help to give him a Vice President who he can send out to talk about things with plausible deniability.

In this scenario, when Trump finds out on January 26 that Flynn has lied to Pence, he's not upset with Flynn and doesn't want to fire him. On the contrary, he's happy that Flynn has been a loyal soldier and not spilled the beans to Pence. So he doesn't fire Flynn. It's only when news of the whole thing goes public that Flynn becomes too much of a political liability and Trump is forced to ask for his resignation. This scenario would also help explain why yesterday in his news conference, Trump doesn't criticize a fired National Security Advisor who has lied to his VP but instead criticizes the leaker(s) and the media for, in effect, forcing him to fire a loyal soldier.

If Trump fired Flynn only because Flynn made Pence look horrible common sense tells us he would have done so as soon as he knew. After all, Trump is known to act quickly and decisively. The scenario I've proposed is more nuanced and fits the facts of the delay in the firing, Trump's defense of a known liar and Pence's seeming ignorance of what was going on.

On another, related note, whatever the reasons were for Flynn being fired, I also think it's quite possible the leak came not from the intelligence community but, rather, from one of Flynn's detractors in the WH. He didn't have a lot of fans in the Administration.

I assume this is more double speak, because it does not definitely say that two-state is the only solution the US would pursue.

An EPA-supervised crew is what caused the Colorado yellow river pollution/spill. I don't think that's relevant to needing to update 33-year old regulations.

Trump just quoted a Rasmussen Poll on his approval that has him +10, there are only two other recent polls that have him positive and they both have him at +1. There are many other polls showing disapproval ranging from -3 to -17.
