I am currently in possession of an ex's six month old dog. I haven't heard from her for over two weeks, so I guess she abandoned it. I've already renamed and started training it, however there is the issue of him becoming a little over excited when he doesn't see you in a while. Yes, he has a tendency to tinkle when he first comes up to you.

Will having him neutered take care of this? He is also a little skittish if you make any quick moves at him. I may have just inherited a small dog with emotional issues.

My gigantic, loveable great dane puppy has had the crap scared out of him twice today...once by a five lined skink, and on the evening walk just concluded, by a toad.

Hysterical.

I need some halp.

I'll hopefully be a first-time dog owner soon, but my wife has grown up with two dogs since she was 14 years-old and was very instrumental in their care, especially during the younger years.

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, we're trying to rescue a boxer. The agency is an NFP and has dogs available throughout the northeast. They mentioned about doing a house visit almost three weeks ago, but needed a volunteer in my area (I live in Philadelphia). In the interim, they wanted me to send a picture and video of our house and neighborhood. I sent that information along and have not heard back from them in over two weeks. I've followed-up a few times and still haven't received a response. Part of me thinks they didn't like our house (which I don't understand why), but the other part of me says they're an NFP and they work on their own free time. I understand that being a first time owner and going the rescue route might leave me open to more scrutiny/due diligence, but this process has been going on for almost two months now. I’m not really sure what I should do…any advice/stories are greatly appreciated.

Neutering will help a lot, though it's not an immediate cure. Nice of you to hang onto him.

My dog would often pee when he got excited/when people came in the house. The real pisser (no pun intended) was that he would also flop onto his back so many times he ended up peeing on himself. He was not a smart dog.

Anyway, neutering didn't really have much effect but it stopped as he got older.

Iknow it doesn't help when you come in the door but I tried to take him out a few minutes before if I knew someone was coming over. That didn't always help, though.

It seems like the organization you are dealing with is messed up. When we adopted little Abby, the process took two weeks or so. We met Abby her first day in the area. -- she was rescued in Eastern Washington and moved to the south sound because ratites are easier to place here.

But the New Rattitude organization is really tight. I filled out an extensive application. Home visit about a week later. Then she came home to stay. I think the only reason it even took that long was because she was so new. The organization does the shots and other stuff.

There are a lot of ways to adopt a dog. You might consider another route?
