They used the clones for as long as those Clone Wars era clones were viable as troops. Remember that they had an accelerated aging process--that's how the Kaminoans were able to produce a huge army within a decade. I don't think there's any canon confirmation of the aging rate, but the consensus seems to be around two years. My educated guess is that some clones were aged faster than others.

Once the Clone Wars ended, they opened Imperial Academies around the galaxy and trained regular people to be Imperial officers, pilots, stormtroopers, etc. By the time of Ep IV, there were a few clones still in service--mostly the ones who were still babies or juveniles when Order 66 came down--but most of them were dead or too old to be in active service by that point. That's 19 years since Order 66, so they'd aged around 40 years.

If I wanted to read a Star Wars book or two in order to catch me up and fill in some stuff that happens between now and when this movie comes out, what would it/they be? Is there such a thing or do I have to watch The Clone Wars?

Read Aftermath if you want to stick to books and only want to read one or two. It doesn't follow our original heroes--in fact, it barely mentions some of them--but it's a very good read. It gives you a lot of the "what the hell happens now?" perspective, especially from the Imperials. And after every few chapters it has an "interlude" chapter that takes you somewhere completely unrelated to the main storyline and often uses characters that we know from the original trilogy. I also expect that some of the new characters introduced in Aftermath will appear in the next films. The first chapter or two is available on starwars.com if you want to check it out before buying it. It's the first book in a trilogy, but the next two books won't come out until well after Ep VII. I think the second book is due in summer 2016.

If you're willing to branch out a bit, check out the Shattered Empire comic book series. It's four issues, and the final issue drops this week. It deals with the main characters a bit more than Aftermath does, but it still mostly follows a new character (who is related to one of the characters to Ep VII, but I won't say more than that b/c it's a minor spoiler). The art is absolutely beautiful, and the storyline is very compelling too. I've been raving about it in the comics thread.

There is a ton of new media out there, a lot of which fills in time periods between the other movies. There's a particular focus on the post-Ep III timeline, but there's also a lot of comics that fill in the details of the period between Eps IV and V. Some of that earlier stuff also gives hints about what may be happening in the timeline leading up to Ep VII, especially about what Luke is doing now. There are three junior novels--one each for Luke, Leia, and Han/Chewie--that are set up as a frame story, so the beginning and end chapters give you a bit more insight into the Ep VII world. Those are actually really good reads, but I don't know how much of a time/money commitment you want to make for it.

I've got pretty much all of the new books on Kindle. I'd be happy to lend them to you if you want to hit me up.

Forgot to mention, there's another young adult novel ("Lost Stars") that follows the life of two Imperial cadets/officers through the entire original trilogy and climaxes a couple of years after the Battle of Endor. You get to see a post-ROTJ battle that is featured in the upcoming Battlefront game and is heavily present in the trailers for Ep VII.

It's a good read, but it's definitely a teen romance story at times. It was long but worth it for the insight into Ep VII and for the off-screen details from the original trilogy. I'd add that at the end if you're willing to put the time into it, but you can definitely get along without it.

What I really like about the new canon is that it's making the Star Wars galaxy so much bigger. Even in the old Expanded Universe, nearly everything revolved around a Skywalker or one of the secondary characters from the films (like the Rogue Squadron series). So far, we're meeting new people, seeing new planets, learning about new alien species, and getting point-of-view chapters from Imperials.

Got my tickets last night. 10:30 PM on the 17th in Bloomsburg. Not really a hot ticket there, but at least I'm in a theatre.

No.

Jokes aside, it's not that complicated. The six movies and Clone Wars are canon. Other than that, every book, tv show, film, comic book, video game put officially released by Lucasfilm/Disney since September 2014 is canon. The first book of the new canon is "A New Dawn," which is about two of the main characters from the Star Wars Rebels series and is a prequel to that series.

If it was made before that (including the novelizations of the first six films), it is not canon.

The only catch is that some non-canon material is considered highly influential (e.g., the Knights of the Old Republic stuff, the Darth Bane trilogy, or the Darth Plagueis novel), but that's just debate for the really hardcore fans and doesn't impact anyone else.

So is this new bad guy a Sith? If so, who trained him? Or is that all supposed to not be revealed until the movie?

Unknown. What little we do know from interviews with Lucasfilm reps is that he is not a Sith but something called a "Knight of Ren." We don't know whether that is a Dark Side group or a cult that happens to have a prominent Force user. I think we can assume that there are more of them, given the brief glimpse in the trailer of multiple knight-ish looking guys wearing masks and holding some kind of swords while gathered around Kylo.

In Aftermath, we briefly meet some people who appear to be part of a cult of Vader. That's probably the predecessor group of these Knights of Ren.

I ma mostly working out of the library so I'll start with Aftermath and go from there. Not sure how lending books through a kindle works but that would be awesome. Thanks (and thanks for the info...good stuff)!

I've never done it before but it looks pretty easy. The only catch is that you can only loan to one person at a time and the time limit is 2 or 3 weeks (I forget which). But you can always circumvent the time limit the same way that you do with library e-books by just turning off your Kindle's wifi and not syncing with Amazon until you're done with the book.

If you PM me your e-mail address attached to your Amazon account I'll give it a shot with Aftermath.
