Yea, I mean, we won 97 and 102 games in 2010 and 2011. Sometimes things just don't break for you in the playoffs. 2011 was the big heartbreaker for me when we COULDN'T SCORE A FUCKING RUN in Game 5. Sorry, I'm still bitter.

Amaro had nothing to do with those teams that won all those games. The credit should go to Ed Wade or even Roy Hamey.

He didn't lay the groundwork, no, but he did have a hand in adding some pieces (Halladay, Lee twice, Oswalt, Pence, Ibanez) that helped us get there. I'm not an Amaro apologist though so I'm not trying to keep advocating for him. I feel like I should go shower now.

Murray Dickson, Jim Greengrass, Marv Blaylock, Bobby Morgan and Elmer Valo and Saul Rogovin and Solly Hemus. That formed the core that led to our glory days.

It was tough watching him struggle so bad the last 2 years. He gave us all he had, and outworked everyone. That's all you can hope for.

Not a big surprise, I guess.
(Brandy) only hinted at Halladay's personal issues during her Hall of Fame speech last July, when she said, "Roy would want everyone to know that people are not perfect. We're all imperfect and flawed in one way or another. We all struggle."

No regrets to have had Roy even for his two dominant seasons. Only sad for him that he didn't get that ring for the 102 win Phillies... :(

Not since Lefty did I enjoy a guy start-to-start - the "Ace of Aces" ... not sure he played long enough - but hope he gets to the HOF.

Why? I figured the only way he'd ever consider going into the HOF as a Phillie would be if he won a ring or two. Without that, why wouldn't he retire a Blue Jay? Without the Blue Jays investing in him, his retirement happens twelve years ago and nobody gives a damn.

I think the only time I saw him was this last season, against San Diego on September 12. He had a seven run lead and just had to make to through the fifth to pick up a win but couldn't do it. Heartbreaking and I'm sure extremely frustrating for him. Glad he did manage to pick up a win after that, since I was afraid it was his last chance.

That was perhaps the only time live, but I prefer to remember his cold-eyed stare keeping me glued to the chair while I watched him dice up another batter on tv.

Because in lieu of a WS ring or two, the two achievements he'll be best remembered for - the perfect game and the post-season no-no - were in a Phillies uniform.

That Philadelphia sports fans are demanding, psychotic, violent illiterates is a trope that we tire of as much as we play into. Our leading sports radio voice has spent the past 15 years waging war against Donovan McNabb, from the moment he was drafted to the present day. We ran Eric Lindros out of town for committing the crime of leading us to the cusp of a Stanley Cup, then did the same to Allen Iverson and Mike Richards. We almost did the same to Cole Hamels, and we’re another losing season or two from doing it Claude Giroux. The Phillies’ all-time OBP leader, Bobby Abreu, is, to this day, reviled for reasons I still have trouble articulating. We Philadelphia sports fans aren’t angry, or demanding, or passionate. We’re certifiable.

loved Baumann's article until I got to this paragraph and the bolded part specifically. AI was beloved even with all his ridiculously transparent flaws.

Doesn't matter what he'd consider anyway as they changed that rule. If you recall, Dawson wanted to go in as a Cub, but he's there as an Expo. I think they pretty much just pick whatever team you spent the most time playing for

I think he cares a little. While he was traded and thus didn't really "desert" Toronto, I'm sure he sees the retirement gesture as a a bit of a way to heal any hurt feelings.

But yeah, anyone in either Philly or Toronto that doesn't respect what he did and how he did it can take a flying leap.

I should probably read entire posts before I begin to respond. For someone that's sarcastic so frequently, it's pretty funny that I don't pick it up from others.
