Should be good races for both menabd women, but don't expecy fast times. Temps will bewins. great, but course is hilly with lots of turns, and they'll be battling 15-20 mph winds.

a brief preview

My brother in law is down there watching. Have a good time!

So, you are saying that the conditions are inhospitable.

I swear I was nothing but tired and cold when I typed that on my phone, but even I have no idea what "Temps will bewins. great" means. I think "wins" is supposed to be "fine."

In any case, running 2:09-2:10 in those conditions is very impressive.

Y'know I'm completely refraining from being "that guy" on any social media, but we're here on BSG so being a jerk is expected. Sara Hall ran a great race-a new PR at age 37, 6th best American performer-heck just second in the London Marathon, even in this strange year, speaks for itself. But Mary Chepngetich was the only runner to go with the leader, and stuck with her for over 18 miles before falling off, but hanging on strongly enough to be second until Hall's "great kick." Great run by both of them, but if I'm a coach or a fan, I'm prouder of Chepngetich's effort.

But she obviously wore herself out and didn't have enough juice to hold? Sara Hall ran better by beating her, no?

Think Swish’s point is she tried to win. I get that.

Exactly. Nothing against Sara Hall, who knew if she had tried to run 2:18 she would have completely bonked, and ran a race plan that allowed her to perform her best ever, which is a great plan to have. Chepngetich ran to win-if she had just wanted to aim for a specific time that day, or to get second, the result may have been different. Both should be satisfied with their efforts, though Hall more satisfied with the result. Just asif Hall had gone out as fast as Chepngetich that would have been silly, if Chepngetich had run Hall's race people would have been wondering what was wrong with her. Instead she went after in on a day when she may not have been at her best.

An awful lot of social media commentary though is along the lines of "Sara Hall outkicks the world marathon champion!" They were already a minute apart six miles in, and didn't even see each other until just before the finish. in many ways they were running completely different races.I mean it works out fine. Hall and her fans are ecstatic. Chepngetich has run 2:17 and has won the World Championships. 2nd or third is not that big a deal to her. As a coach, though you always feel a little twinge of unfairness when an athlete loses honers becasue they ran a more aggressive race, while if they had settled for a head to head duel withe person overtaking them the result may have been different.

I do not care what country or kingdom is emblazoned across an athlete's chest. Only what shoe company they hath upon their feet.

Celebrating someone who ran the race of their life does not diminish the wonderful qualities, talents, accomplishments and tactics of fellow competitors. Great races.
