R.I.P. Harry Kalas: 1936-2009

Postby Bakestar » Tue Apr 14, 2009 10:01:19

On MLB Network, every other commercial break they seem to play the last out of the World Series, with Harry's call, as a promo... every time they played it last night and this morning I had to choke them back again.

I did not want to ring back when I got in as it was late by then but thank you very much for ringing to tell me. I read the reports in the Philadelphia Inquirer this morning. And what struck me was the connection with my dad. All three of them, Richie, HK and my dad died in the harness so to speak doing or involved with baseball. And I also think how proud my dad would be to know how committed you are to the Phillies. I am really glad I was able to hear HK do the World Series game last autumn. It was a wonderful photograph of his throwing out the first pitch this spring. It is abundantly clear from the coverage that people are stricken at his loss.

actually the gran is my ma, but she's referred to as granny these days on account of wizlette being moma.

I've just been sad all morning. Then she sent that through and reminded me that grandad died in his sleep whilst listening to a phils game (vs the mets, no less). So that sent me all off crying again. had to go and have a sniffle in private.

I remember what it was like and how stunned I was when whitey died, but like I said, that's when I only knew him as a player who the ma had grown up idolizing, so there wasn't the same sadness. I guess it was something like how we're all feeling today.

I think its great and well-deserved that Harry continues to be the front page story on ESPN.com. Decent obit by Jayson Stark too. Not just the voice of the Phillies but their sound, heart and humanity. We are all quite a bit older today.

Does anyone have audio/video (or a link) to Harry's call of Stairs' home run the other day? I'm out of market so I didn't get to see it, and that's one I'd really like to have. Thanks.

Yesterday, like most weekdays when the Phillies have an afternoon game, I dvr'd the game and watched it that evening. So I went home knowing about Harry but not the outcome of the game.

All throughout the game, I realized I was hearing "Harry Kalas playbacks" in my mind as I watched the game. After a play, I would think about it and somehow hear Harry describing. He really is baseball to me. Not was, is.

On that nice diving catch Raul Ibanez made late in the game, I could just hear him saying "great catch, rah ool ee bahn yezzzzz!"

Harry Kalas lives on, in all these tributes and certainly our memories.

Even though I never met the man, I consider him a friend. I spent countless nights/days listening to the man. It will never be the same. Thanks for the memories, Harry.

Bill Lyon:

The stories will linger, and one Harry loved to relate was about the night Tim McCarver, a loquacious sort, as you know, was on the air with Harry and Whitey regaling them about pieces of ash that had been formed by the volcanic eruption of Mount St. Helens.

Harry, take it away:

"Tim was prattling on about those pieces of ash and how some were rough while there were others that were smooth, and Whitey, you know, got that twinkle in his eye, the one where you know something's coming, and he took his pipe out of his mouth and he said: 'You know, Tim, I always thought if you've seen one piece of ash, you've seen them all.' "
I know what you're asking yourself and the answer is yes. I have a nick name for my penis. Its called the Octagon, but I also nick named my testes - my left one is James Westfall and my right one is Doctor Kenneth Noisewater.

Just saved that Stairs HR and final out.

One thing I have to say is that Comcast has done a great job covering all of this. I usually view them as an evil empire, but short of showing a classic Harry & Whitey game, they've done everything possible to help us all get through this.

And as was already suggested, I really hope that they play "Outta hear" over the PA system whenever one of our guys hits a home run from now on.

I ended up being able to show HK calling the last two outs to 4 of my 5 classes. I don't know if all the kids liked it but I enjoyed doing it to kinda honor Harry in my own little way.

on the way back to reading from bethlehem, there are two LED billboards. one: "Harry Kalas 1936-2009", the other: "We'll miss you, Harry".
