Serena dominated the first set, lost the second, and is now trailing in the 3rd

Yeah, ESPN, Serena sure has had a tough go of things. She's made 37 million dollars playing tennis.

She had a hematoma, which developed from her having a pulmonary embolism. Hematoas aren't usually life threatening. I hate the Williams Sisters in general, because they act really privileged anymore, but I'm sure their early life growing up in Compton was no picnic.

thought all of that lead to a pretty severe blood clot. didn't they find a lot of this out after she like stepped on broken glass at the miami restaurant? but she did have some serious ish during like a 1-2 year stretch.

The glass was unrelated, but yeah, that happened before all of this.

A pulmonary embolism is usually caused by a clot(to the lungs). She did miss the first half of 2011 because of it.

Just to get the chronology right, a pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot (or other material)travels to the lungs and eventually lodges in the vessels there, causing a blockage.

I've had it happen twice, with actually showers of clots causing multiple emboli. I didn't die, which is good, and was able to dissolve the clots through medication. I've gone on both times to fully recover and pretty much be able to run faster than ever, with allowances for the fact that I'm an ancient old coot. Serena's clots were apparently generated after surgery on her foot following a laceration of it after a still pretty much unexplained nightclub accident. She then also required surgery to have the embolism removed. Why this was either I don't really know, since it's almost never used.I assume it's this surgery that caused her prolonged absence, since otherwise treatment is a bit of a pain in the ass but not really incapacitating. Embolisms themselves are scary, but if they don't kill you and are treated there's really no lingering effect, except perhaps if have a pulmonary infarct which can leave a little(or more)lingering back pain.
