I really wish the NL would retain a no DH structure but I have accepted the ship has sailed. If they are going to combine teams into a single "MLB" this year for a short season it makes no sense to try to track two sets of rules. And going forward a geographic realignment with expansion seems like an inevitable idea, to cut down on travel costs and increase the number of games for each team in its own time zone.

Essentially every level of organized ball employs the DH so the NL is now a real outlier. I don't like it but it is what it is.

There really aren’t that many full time DHs. I don’t think it’s a huge advantage for the AL teams. If a team pays a DH then it just means they aren’t paying some other part of their team.

I think it’s good for the Phillies, gives Bohm more of a chance for ABs, the less Bruce and Hoskins are in the field the better, you can keep JT in the line up more, maybe even give Harper and Cutch more breaks.
Two days later I get a text back that says I'm a basketball player and a businessman, not a Thundercat.

I am moreso just saying in a sport where 1 game of 162 can separate you making the playoffs or not, it's pretty shitty to immediately force a rule on half of the teams while the other half have made roster decisions based on that rule for years.

I agree on the latter point, and I am not sure what the Phillies would have done differently, but given all of the micro-decisions that baseball has been boiled down to, it's not unreasonable to think the experience / "advance notice" the AL has is worth something.

Yes it’s definitely somewhat of an advantage I just don’t think it’s a very notable one. Maybe for the twins since cruz is someone that already is a full time DH.

Season is already messed up, at best they play 100 games this year or they play a ton of double headers, I'm fine with them adding in the DH. Divisions will be messed up as well, no way to prepare for any of it. It was coming, probably a good decision to throw it in during an already screwy season.

If any Phillie was made for full-time DH, it's Bruce, IMO. But yes, all those other scenarios fit, as well

still need for bohm to get some reps in the field. wouldn't mind seeing him get some at bats with the big club, but if intra squad games are happening in clearwater, i would probably consider that first. kid's gonna hit but it would be so sweet if he could play 3rd full time.

Should also largely get rid of those Knapp late game pitch hit attempts that were taking months off my life.

Postby PSUsarge » Mon May 11, 2020 15:54:53

Pretty thoughtful thread by Sean Doolittle - https://twitter.com/whatwouldDOOdo/stat ... 0992410626

A few highlights:

@whatwouldDOOdo
So how many tests do we need to safely play during a pandemic? And not just tests for players. Baseball requires a massive workforce besides the players; coaches, clubhouse staff, security, grounds crews, umpires, gameday stadium staff, TV & media...we need to protect everyone.

@whatwouldDOOd
And that's before we get to hotel workers and transportation workers (pilots, flight attendants, bus drivers). They are essential workers. We wouldn't be able to play a season without them, and they deserve the same protections.

@whatwouldDOOdo
We need to consider what level of risk we're willing to assume. 80% of cases are considered mild, but what if a player, a staff member, an auxiliary worker, or a family member gets a case that's in the 20% and they develop severe symptoms or chronic issues? 1 feels like too many?

@whatwouldDOOdo
There are a number of players & staff who have pre-existing conditions that they are aware of (and likely more who aren't yet). We need a plan that seriously considers the increased health concerns of any players, staff or workers who are at higher risk.
