Other than an exception here and there — like Game 1 of the 2001 NBA Finals, featuring Allen Iverson’s step-over of Tyronn Lue — most of the re-aired games have been from the past five years. (Monihan has noticed the social media comments from fans who would like to watch older games of the Philadelphia teams.) The network and teams (and their respective leagues) realized life without sports would extend for a while, so they collectively looked into expanding NBCSP’s programming library. The network was offered games from the past, which meant going through a team’s archives and figuring out what did and didn’t work. For example, NBCSP would’ve loved to air all of the 1980 World Series games, Monihan said, but some of the broadcasts weren’t up to today’s “air quality” or had degenerated. Monihan said there were other older Phillies games NBCSP wanted to air, but the organization’s only copies were the other team’s broadcast, which wasn’t ideal.
“We would love to put those things on,” Monihan said, “but we had to kind of work through a process with teams and then the league. … There was a lot of work between our programming team, our content team, and then working with the teams and leagues to be able to come up with some creative solutions.”
NBCSP is also in the process of working to re-air a select number of games, regular season and postseason, from the Phillies’ run to the 2008 World Series title. There has not been an official announcement, but Murray said they hope to begin airing the 2008 games in May.
